Hi guys, I am in the process of acquiring a 1970Mk1 3000GT automatic. I'd like to get it back on the road without too much hassle. Its missing a flexplate which I could probably source but alternatively I have seen a Type E box from Escort RS2000. Would this slip in without too much trouble? I am aware that most owners prefer the Tremec 5 speeds but that is probably a project for the future. I'm looking for minimum work at this stage. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

as you are in Adelaide, I'd strongly suggest talking to Taff. I think he's back in Wales now, but should be able to help on his return

Hi the Type E box will not hold up, ideally you need a Type 5 but these are hard to find in Australia. The V6 Capri in manual form used the Type F ( poss also known as Type J??) which was an external shift box that looks like a "Top Loader". There are plenty around as they were a heavy old lump that did not break often. You can use the Type 9 (5 speed) but you will need to find a V4 bellhousing to mate it to a V6.
The Auto used a Spiggot bush you will need to take out and replace with a bearing (I have these). You will also need to source a Flywheel which should not be too hard, clutches are still available new. Dont forget you will need a clutch and brake pedal. Good news is there is no difference in the diff ratio between auto and manual so you can leave it (no difference in transmission tunnel either-although I have seen the crossmember bolts sometimes differ between the two |

You might find someone selling the parts for a celica 5sp conversion, that’s another option.
