Default speaker upgrades

I have an au1 forte and i am upgrading the sound system. What speakers are easy to install in an au? I'm replacing both front and back. Has anyone managed to get 6" splits or 6x9s in without too much fuss? Also what are the dimensions of those funny sized stock speakers? Can you buy high powered 2 or 3 way spkrs in that size? Any help appreciated

the stock speakers are 5x7"

people are getting 6" splits in the doors, just makeing up a wooden spacer, that screws into the 5x7 holes im assuming and mounting the speaker on that.

6x9's can be put in the rear parcel shelf. but need to be screwed in from underneath, unless you want to use a spacer on top of the parcel shelf.

It all depends on the type of speaker that you get, cause i got 6inch speakers in my doors with no mdf spacer, juct had to make up a couple of brackets for it.

Cheers

I put 6" in the front doors with a spacer made out of MDF as suggested
And I upgraded the factory tweeters
Chucked a sub in the boot
Didn't worry about the rears, I run them from the head unit and run the fronts & sub thru an amp

yeah think ill chuck me 6" splits in the front with a spacer, and the 6x9s under the back shelf. They should complement the two 12" pups in the boot :evil_laug

Seriously there is no need for 6 x9's if you have subs mate. The rear speakers are for rear fill only(passengers) so stick with nice 5 x 7's in the rear parcel shelf. The rears will be high passed if done properly anyway, say 80hz and up. Spend the bucks on good front splits and deadning, your ears will thankyou for it!

Just whack in 5x7's all round, splits up front, 2-ways in the rear.. no mucking around, no making/modifying, just screw them into the standard locations, amp them, run a sub and she's all sweet.

my stock system sounds alrite being complemented by 2x 15" JLs in the rear and a JVC headunit and chinese in dash screen up front... the new headunit really helps the stock splits along!!

What happens if you just upgrade the existing 5X7 to something better, will it still distort??

007 - they wont distort by upgrading the stock speakers. Just remember, you need to think about how they are being powered. a set of speakers rated at 80watts RMS are still going to distort if they are solely powered by a 15 - 20 wrms x 4 head unit - which most are. Running any speakers from an alternate power source than the head unit will give you far better results. try match rms values and you should be sweet.

5x7s will be fine if your just after a drop in solution
BUT be mindful of the mount DEPTH as some are a fair bit deeper than the stock location can take and will need spacers anyway! ( i beleive the alpines fall into this catagory)
but a spacer to fit 5x7 cant be hard to make as its just a case of traceing around the speaker

as far as stock speakers go, they are fairly decent with a decent head unit, i still have the stock ones in the front of mine with a sony mp3 player and they sound a lot better that what better speakers with a stock headunit would sound...thats my opinion anyway, if you have already got an aftermarket headunit then i guess a speaker upgrade does help
