We got broken into while we were home

Yeh.. so.. living away from the city etc hasn't really helped..

We DID live in mount druitt.. being told daily how dangerous it is.. for years without a single problem EVER..

Then.. we move up to the wonderful blue mountains.. get a nice 2 storey place..

Last night.. playing Xbox in our games room (me and gf), music going.. etc etc.. finish up early AM go to kitchen turn lights off.. notice door open.. dont think anything of it (we have a cat we leave it open sometimes).. close it.. go to bed.

Today.. notice girlfriend cant find her handbag (usually hangs on a door knob in the hallway).. look EVERYWHERE.. specifically remembered it was there.. so I tell her to go look in the car "just in case!"..

She comes back in nearly crying.. freaked out.. says the car is open.. doors wide open.. been ransacked.. glovebox open.. stuff everywhere.. had been broken into..

Then think about the back door open .. all clicks together .. they broke into our car.. didnt find anything.. go around to backyard see door open.. sneak in.. steal her bag.. they wouldve KNOWN we were awake all the lights were on and the music was going..

This is while our 6yr old daughter is asleep behind the door right next to the one my gf's bag was hanging on..

So yeh.. right now I feel like i've been raped.. we're now getting security doors put in.. sensor-lights front and back.. and probably a zoned alarm..

Would NEVER have thought this would happen here :(

PS i'm not new to the area and naive.. i grew up here.. then lived down in the ghetto/druitt with my gf for a few years and now i got us to move back up here because i think of it as a safer place.. lots has changed!

The bit that gets me is I convinced my gf to move up here based on how safe it is.. how our neighbour and even I usually leave our car unlocked or at least a window open without caring.. and in the druitt we NEVER had a SINGLE issue with anyone.. nor did any of our friends.. and our first major issue is here in Leura.

I swear.. if i'd caught that guy i'd happily put up with some jail time.

Sorry to hear it mate, there are just some absolute c#*ts out there seriously,
ive lived in the mountains all my life and never had the problem of theft or anything like that, nor have i heard any storys around were i live (faulconbridge), but its becoming more and more common people doing this when u least suspect it (when ur at home with music on loud),
anyway i hope you didnt lose anything of significant value, and hope the barstards get whats coming for them

If you decied that you want to put in a security system and feel that you want some advice feel free to pm me ( I work for a national security firm )
I can give you an idea of what you should be paying and what sort of options that most of the systems are capable of.
Just remember that the most expensive is not always the best.

Only thing so far missing is gf's handbag.. cards have been cancelled etc and no 'significant' amounts of cash were in it but still enough to hurt us.. though we havent had a really long look yet too busy with police.. they must've had other issues because they're taking it really serious? Sending out people to fingerprint the car and back door.. unless that's become standard procedure now.. years ago we got broken into (me and a housemate) and they just took a statement and thats it.

Man thieves are the lowest of the low. You want something, do what the rest of us do and F*&K(*G earn it. It sucks when some jerk feels he is entitled to invade our space. had a similar thing with my ex. It was mid A.M. on a Thursday and I was lying in bed, I go out and the house got ransacked, BIG time. The worst was they went through all her personal , like photos, memory stuff etc. Not a lot of money value but HUGE personal value. Maybe we could deport all our thieves somewhere niiice, where they cut off their hands... or other apendage....

Yeh man I don't care about the money.. its the feeling of being violated.. plus the fact the some of my gf's fav pics of our little girl were in her wallet.. plus that the scum-sucker was 3 feet from where our girl was sleeping.. just a door between them.. makes my stomach turn over :(

I have some part time neighbours who reside in your area, this was lower Blue Mountains.

One night asleep at about 3am three intruders break-in (home invasion), they target the husband whilst in bed, immediately bashing him with a club sending him senseless to the floor (he had made an attempt to get up on hearing noise-his facial injury is loud and clear a week after the event), his wife screams and is told to shut the etc up, she is terrified, sobbing and totally lost and in fear of losing their lives. A younger male friend staying with them runs on hearing the commotion to the room.

He is confronted out of the darkness by a shotgun in the face. He obeys the instant command to get on the floor. 'Whoooaaa - yeah ahhh no worries man okay?".

One of the intruders is an islander. They set about ransacking the place and taking what they could. Expected questions, where is the cash, wallets etc and so on.

Still at large, event occured in the last year.

Security upgraded. A larger spacial property.

The alarm wouldnt have helped.. we were up, awake, in the other room playing xbox live.. we'd even gone to the kitchen a few times to grab drinks etc.. even if we had an alarm it wouldn't be on..

You don't generally lock all your doors when you're awake.. or turn the alarm on.. even a zoned one.. until you're going to bed.

My point about getting an alarm is just because this has made us realise you're not safe anymore even in nice quiet areas where people leave their cars unlocked and doors/windows open regularly. Times are a changin.

I would check around the area as I bet your gf handback is in a bin/garden bed etc.
It sucks that we cannot live with eachother knowning that nothing will be stolen.

I think that if theifs got their hands chopped off they would not steal...

Mate, I feel for you. I'm glad no-one was hurt, but really pi%%ed off that someone would be that brazen. As bad as it is, I'm glad that they were only interested in what they took and not forcing the issue and hurting yourself or your loved ones. I lived in the upper mountains for decades and didn't think it was getting that bad. Obviously it has. I guess one of problems is they know it will take the Police a while before they can respond, since the the stations are that far apart.

Police just came.. someone handed in my gf's wallet to the katoomba police station but then left without giving any details.. so we cant find out -where- it was found and look for the rest of the stuff..

The wallet didnt have the money any way .. just cards..

Her money-purse-thingy, her handbag (worth a fair bit), and she remembered her new designer watch she just got from her mum was in the bag too.. thats all still missing.

They're sending out people tomorrow to do fingerprinting stuff to the inside of the car.

They have a suspect apparently.. they wont give us details but said they're looking into it.

I guess the one good thing about living in relatively well off area (even if we're far from it :P) is that cops take stuff like this a lot more serious.. i mean.. in druitt it'd take an armed holdup for cops to start fingerprinting and investigating stuff!

If you have a yard a dog is a great deterent, its been the difference between my house not getting broken in to. Funny thing that, dogs can bite em and get away with it too, if the scumbags are on your property.

Female Rottweiler... no training needed... naturally protective and will stand up to any uninvited guest... Can stay inside house for 8-10 hours without peeing on your floor... top dogs, all my family have Female rotties... all good with kids including newborn kiddies... Get a small bred one if possible...

It's true!, during the day you would'nt know we had a female Rottie, come night time, god help anyone that would try to break in. Jack russell's are great early warning dogs as well. (too bad you're not in Melb, we have a litter of 11 Rottie pups, 2 weeks old this coming Tuesday!, but only two girls!.

sorry mate lets hope it is all over and wont happen again . i think the thief will probably know you wont be bitten twice so probably will stay away from you now . lets hope so anyway . 2ndly the dog thing is a very good idea . i have a german shephard and a large see through gate everyone who passes by knows i have a dog. and i have had no break ins . but a lot of thigs stolen from the front yard . so get i dog mate . and make sure the police and nieghbours are all informed.

Same thing has happened to us. About 3 times.

- Stole mum's purse of dinnig room table while we were unloading groceries out of the car. How they did that still amazes me considering the most likely scenario involves them leaving through the same door we were walking through to unload car.

- Broke into parents bedroom while we having dinner. Stole nothing. But an old nappy bag that was black and looks like a purse.

- Came through the front office window during the night and my mum got up to get a drink at same time. She caught them, yelled out and they ran away without stealing anything.

- When we were young they jumped onto verandah around the back. Once again didn't steal anything because Dad yelled out the good old "get the gun" call.

- Someone walked into our downstairs rumpus room off the street and stole our Dreamcast, CDs and a few items of clothing.

Mind you we live in a busy, inner-city/"nice" suburb on a main road 800m to a train station. It seems as if it is standard Police operating bull to tell you they are going to take finger prints. I guess it is some sort of visible action to put your mind at rest. Needless to say none of the culprits have ever been caught.

Oh what's this in the mail? Another speeding ticket?!! Hooray

It's truly F'd how vulnerable they can make you feel..

I can't sleep.. every noise I hear when lying in bed i'm reaching for the metal bar i've put next to the bed.

It's not a vulnerable-because-i'm-scared-i'll-run-into-them feeling.. it's more the fact that I worry about them coming and doing it again WITHOUT me running into them.

I sit here HOPING they'll try again while i'm awake.. but that same feeling is stopping me from going to sleep.

I know the police wont/can't do anything about it.. it's 99% some guy who was on the hunt for some easy money for a fix or whatever reason.. and is most probably not even from the area.. but it's that 1% chance that stops my mind from easing off to let me get some rest.

I've been beaten to within an inch of my life for the $5 in my wallet.. i've had cars stolen, other cars broken into for coins, i've been at work when the place was robbed.. but i've never felt this vulnerable.. because this is in my own god damn home! The one place you're meant to be able to put your feet up and chillax without a worry in the world.

Ps: Female rotties.. can they be indoor dogs with daily walking and regular playtime in the backyard? or do they need to live in a yard? Main thing is our backyard is fenced in by a hedge not a proper fence.. and also there's cats in the area that roam free so I think an indoor dog would be the better way to go.. then we take it into the yard to play and also take it on walks daily. I'm seriously open to suggestions.. willing to buy one this week if I know what to buy exactly.

Your call if you want the dog inside, as with everything training, you may need to fix your hedge with better fencing ( whole yard ) but worth it, we have a dual setup where if we are home the dog ( female doberman ) is locked into the back part of the house / car shed areas or if out or at night open this up to give full run of the entire property, and during the day if your out probably a better call than leaving the dog inside.

but as others have said you wont be bothered by any more late night visitors, i cant count he number of brown stains on my footpath from unsuspecting passers by who leap 20 feet in the air when our dog lets them know / coming in here is not good.

this is natural for her to protect her boundaries.

I understand your situation well. This has happened to me, had the car done on a seperate occasion though, it takes an event like this to look at ourselves and fix the security. I hope you can organise the new security features soon.

You'll be ok, if anything they gave you something. Strength, and determination to avoid this happening again, to learn more about security, and possibly get you and your girl to get some self defence training. Sure it ****ed you off for a bit and you'll never forget it, but noone was hurt. Thats the main thing... your child is safe and these idiots will get busted one day, or with any luck they OD on the drugs they're taking and wont be a problem.
