Default Toyota to fix 1.27 million cars in Japan's largest recall

Quote:
By Bret Okeson and Naoko Fujimura / Bloomberg News

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest carmaker, will fix defects in 1.27 million vehicles in Japan's largest one-time recall.

The recall will cover 16 models including the Corolla, the RAV4 and the Vitz, Toyota said in a filing to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport today. The recall will cost 15.49 billion yen ($134 million), 14.8 billion yen domestically and 690 million yen overseas, said Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco.

There have been no reports of injuries from the defects, the Tokyo-based Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on its Web site today. The affected vehicles were built between May 10, 2000, and Aug. 31, 2002. The carmaker is repairing faulty headlamps in all of the vehicles and faulty brakes in 3,722 units, Toyota said.

Automakers fix the vehicles at no cost to customers. They typically pay for recalls out of reserves set aside for that purpose. A defect in headlamps may turn lights off, Toyota said.
To those who believe Toyota vehicles are immune from defects... phooey!

Plus there's a safety-based recall on at the moment for the Prius. Obviously not Toyota's best year for quality.

When the new wide body Camry came out back in 93, the car won car of the year. Yet there was a major design fault in the transmission. So something like this dosen't surprise me. But it happens, at least they're fixing the problem.

I think the safest thing to do would be to recycle all Toyotas back in to Sunbeam toasters or garden spades, something far more practical and reliable.

I think those new camry sportivos look absolutely awesome. And Im sure most good mechanics would say that toyota are one of the best built cars out there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I still reckon the japanese should stick to building playstations.

i love my fords mate- but i bought the mrs a kluger earlier this year for the simple fact their build quality, reputation, history, resale, reliability and practicality is far beyond anything that is mildly affordable.

I see with your sig, you don't seem to own many "practical" cars- and I would challenge that any of them as a model in general would be more reliable than the vanilla flavoured toyota.

face it, they are good at what they do- recalls aside; every manufacturer has those- the difference is admitting there is a problem and safety is paramount.

Just like steering shafts on AU, the VT's catching fire from a wiring harness etc....

It's actually a recall to replace faulty "headlamp switches". This should tell you all you need to know.

What should australians stick to? Drinking beer, doing nothing and abusing other countries for doing stuff better than them?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, to please an Aussie, you need to engineer something, design and build it completely in a different country, then allow them to claim it as there own. Then, no matter what problems it has (I'm honestly too lazy to list EVERY problem Holden or Ford have had) it will always be the best.

you'll see quite a few VZ/comm-crewcut recalls among others..........couldn't see any FORD though

At least they issued a recall, Mitsubishi used to just cover them up until they got caught out a few years ago. Not small things either, major mechanical safety problems.

I'd still rate their reliability over fords!

Generally, toyotas are renowned for their reliability. but half their cars are butt ugly!!! it's about time they had a safety recall to bring them down a bit. I know fords aren't as reliable, but i'd much rather drive any ford than a camry.

Toyotas arent built to be super sporty cars, try as they might. My family has owned several toyotas over the years. Each of them has generally been bloody reliable. At the current price of fuel, ive been using my mum's Echo and ill tell you simple design means it doesnt break as easily (and 6.9 ltr/100km around town is awesome).

If you want a sports car, buy ferrari. If you want something cheap and reliable for travel, get a Toyota

Not in Australia, VR Commo won it in '93. From memory the Camry got 3rd.

Go drive each of them now though and the result may be different....
