Very susceptible to pinging. Especially with the crap fuel we have. I have had to retard the timing so much in my RS2000 to save the motor that it runs like any other 1.6L car. I'm back to about 2 degrees advanced or mayby even zero. Standard is 6 degrees. Just keep winding the dissy back a couple of degrees at a time until it stops. Also, if you're still running original points/condensor setup be sure your dwell angle is set to 50 degrees.

use premium unleaded or BP ultimate... ill cost like an extra 4 or 5 cents a litre but its a lot more flexible and u can mess around with the timing alot. my mates running ultimate n hes got his at 12 degrees n she runs sweet

Sorry, it impossible to run at 12 degrees even on the old leaded super. Your mate is having you on. Unless of course his engine is clagged and has no compression left in it.
I run optimax in mine plus engine lube/octane booster and it still won't run standard ignition timing. Gives me the irits I can tell you. |

I have a 79 2ltr escort and it runs fine with 12 degrees advance as log as i use premium fuel. if u want to advance the timing just use higher octane fuel. this makes it harder to detonate therefore stopping pinging.

G'day all,
I've tried running the 2 litre using ULP and the Lead additive with timing at 6-7 degrees ... Runs beautifully, now just have to get a bigger radiator as it has a Thermo fan and standard fan for cooling :S .... weird hey Thanks |

There are high and low compression pinto heads which would
explain why some ping like crazy and some run fine at 12 degrees.

Ahh HuH !
Explains a bit more, I actually have an RS2000 head on this motor. Stuffed with the timing a bit got it to 9-10 degrees, running on LRP ( high Octane ) with lead additive, now sweet as a button Thanks Last edited by Esky_Owner; 12-11-2005 at 10:16 PM. Reason: ULP not correct |

whats the go with puttin a 5 speed gears box in a 79 modle bc escort. has for speed manual at the moment with the rs2000 engine mild work done including shaved head, bored cylinders, balanced crank and rods. recent engine rebuild has done little to proformance what is the next step?
