Default Honda: What are you doing?

In another sign that Honda has lost the plot here in Australia, meet the new Civic with a base price of $47,200......

https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-new...rice-and-specs

Honda can expect sell maybe five of these at that price, especially when a similar sized BMW, Mercedes or Audi exists for not much more. Sure, it will be reliable, but a near $50k mainstream small hatch is ludicrous.

RIP Honda.

The Civic was a **** buy at under $30K over a decade ago when I started my career in the automotive industry, let alone now at $50K

I think Honda needs to give up the glass BBQ.

Yeap they have been in that weird area where IMO they are better made/engineered than a Mitsu/Toyo/Subu but the powertrains and package just are not the same as the EU's.

Coincidently I have been looking at a new daily and Ive been doing some research into sedans that are not boring and hopefully a manual CL7 Accord Euro R is looking good but $20-30k for a 15 year old Honda is pushing it but anything "R" is going for good coin at the moment.

Top of the line Mazda3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus until recently all significantly cheaper than this Civic. You’d have to have Rocks in your head to buy this. It‘a creeping into Hot Hatch territory too when it just isn’t…

Good point, a Focus ST is only a few thousand more. I know which one I would buy...

You can negotiate a deal for an ST. Honda prices are fixed. Ouch.

You could probably get an ST cheaper than the Civic.

Definitely would pick an ST for sure.

Love how they are preparing a new Type R to take on the ST/Flog R etc.

Looking at the pricing they'd have already priced themselves out of competing with either. Not to mention it'll probably looking like a dog chewing a wasp like the last one. 2022 Honda will be gone from Australia sadly. They've given us a couple good cars imo.

Also get rid of the RS badge, you dont deserve it

And now look at some local car prices also heading in the same direction for different reasons though.

Default Re: Honda: What are you doing?

When I thought about this- I thought well Honda engineering, the Honda Sport touring gets a good wrap with sharp responsive steering, handling and the manual box is a very sweet short throw 6 speed manual.

On a dyno the power was underrated and it put out some 174 hp on hub dyno, and the torque output is again underrated and is over 300nm.

I then thought, well its like a modern Honda Euro but more power to weight, some $41,000 10 years after Euro is probably right.

Then I realised the car in Australia is a CVT piece of soft crap, not the highly tuned 1.5 turbo, but 131 kw and 240nm for $47,200 drive away.

Hell, the USA Honda Civic Sport Touring with the high spec 1.5 turbo and 6 speed box is $29,400 USA or $41,104.00 AU.

Come on Honda Australia. I have bought Hondas, A Honda Euro, a Honda Civic 1.6 diesel, a Honda Civic 1.6 petrol for the daughter.

If Honda brought out the new Honda Civic 1.5 turbo sport with 6 speed box for $41,000 plus onroads, (with a little pencil sharpening of the final figure) I would look at it.

But the soft CVT softc$ck CVT - for $47,200- come on- do not treat your Australian base as chumps- cause we are not...

And a tyre repair kit- in Australia- really.

You guys have rocks in your head.

Hell the Ford Fiesta ST in Europe (a German built car) had a subwoofer in the boot and a tyre repair kit.

Ford Australia looked after Australian customers- ditched the subwoofer and put in a spare space saver tyre.

I would not buy any car in Australia-period- that did not have a spare tyre. A space saver is the minimum.

Honda Australia you really have dropped the ball here.... hell- great -drive 1000 km on a Sunday with a tyre repair kit.... how thoughtful

Try driving from Melbourne to Darwin with a tyre repair kit - Honda Australia - are you ok?

Hi,
Honda must absolutely have lost it..
A dealer on bikesales advertising just now:

2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R SP ABS Fireblade MY20 $49,999*

In comparison, almost identical new 2021 Suzuki GSXR-1000 ABS, $ 21,990*

I haven't studied what the extra few letters '-R SP' means.. Unless it's a race ready magnesium / titanium bike with lots of fancy parts, and lower weight , totally unclear why it should cost over twice as much as the new Suzuki. Previously Honda and Suzuki bikes used to cost almost the same, maybe just a little more for a Honda.

Cheers,

They’re probably hoping for a nice handout to keep trading here. Even the Citroën C6 was priced more sharply in Australia when sold.

I don’t really understand what Honda is trying to achieve with this agency style model.Just sheer madness.I own a CRV AWD,great car,but Honda seems is trying to set up their own funeral in this country.Their pricing is way out of the ball park.Civic up 16k,are you mad Honda? They are I believe trying to set themselves up as a ‘premium’ car brand, funny way of doing it.They say they will expect to sell around 900 Civics a year, think that is ambitious. If they survive another 5 years I will be very surprised. They took away my local dealer. But the dealer on the other side of the city, set up a service centre & parts only for customers.

I wish the Civic didn't have the CVT as an automatic plus had the manual as an option.

I saw the new the pricing and couldn't believe it. Two main dealers have closed near me. What a shame.

I cannot believe what has happened to Honda. When I first started getting interested in cars many decades ago Honda was a company which built good products and were more highly valued than many of their Japanese counterparts. These days they have become anonymous on Australian roads.

That's what happens when you try emulate the whitegoods manufacturer and lose your soul.

The down hill slide started when they canned Integra, S2000 and made the real crappy Civic Type R (the current one is great)

To put further context around the Civic Type R issue,

This is the Japanese EP3 Civic Type R from the early 00s

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...SE-AD-11920616

This is the 8th generation FN Civic Type R we got in the mid 00s from the UK

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...SE-AD-12017845

This is the Japanese FD2 Civic Type R that we didn't get from the same time:

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...AG-AD-20021320

The 8th generation FN Type R got the boat anchor povvo spec K20, it makes less power than the preceding EP3 car, weighs circa 200kg more and doesn't have an LSD, it shouldn't have the 'Type R' badge on it at all and that's what we got here in Australia.

The FD2 - mechanical LSD, proper K20A engine with 11.5:1 compression ratio, peak power at 8400 RPM, 5.03 ratio final drive, proper Honda hot hatch.

This is what happened to Honda, self inflicted irrelevance, the last good car they offered in our market was the Accord Euro in manual form, then they discontinued it.

I need to stop talking about this because it raises my blood pressure, heartbreaking for any JDM fanboy

Service required every 12 months or 10,000km.

Which means less than 12 months for most people.
