"Falcon GT-HO Makes $331,000 At Shannons Sale

A 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III put Australian Supercars back on the agenda for collectors when it sold for $331,000 at Shannons Melbourne Winter Auction on Monday May 31.

The fully-restored Monza Green sedan, which is believed to have had six owners from new and had 107,000 miles (172,000km) on the clock, was the subject of a fierce bidding war between floor and telephone bidders at the auction, driving its price above its pre-sale guiding range of $260,000-$320,000.

Bidding started at $260,000 and rose in $10,000 leaps before finally ending in a $1,000 slugging match, with victory going to a telephone bidder.

The sale confirms the status of the Phase III GT-HO as Australia's premier muscle car of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ford, Holden and Chrysler waged an annual battle with limited production supercars in the Bathurst 1000 endurance classic. The GT-HO Phase III gained cult status when it took five of the top six places in the 1971 race, with Allan Moffat at the wheel of the winning car.

The sale of the GT-HO was the cherry on top of a bumper auction for Shannons, with sales of cars, memorabilia and heritage number plates of $1.7 million, representing an impressive clearance rate of nearly 80 per cent."

Interesting - this car has an 'interesting' history...

When it was sold in 2005, it had an incorrect tag...
The tags now seem to be correct, but the old tags had the XY Ute ADR numbers, and not the correct XY sedan numbers...

Still - good to see that the market is still pulling good numbers...

Has anyone heard about yesterdays Auction of Chooka's cars?? (the million dollar monaro???)

Yes... as i've alluded to earlier, every car needs to be assessed on its merits which is probably why it sold for the price it did...
Pretty good price for a car that has question marks.

Agreed 100%.... you can't blanket a whole range of cars with a particular pricetag...

And its funny - rarity has different shades of grey also... Phase III seems to still be the 'holy grail' for Ford lovers...
But Holden lovers seem to be different variances of 'holy grails' of course the HK GTS / HG GTS monaros are up there (bathurst editions)... but realistically a VK SS Group A (Group 3 version) is in actual fact rarer than a Phase III (and there are less survivors too)...

$331k is a healthy figure... for the classic/unique market anyways...

Yep, although the HT 350 is the holly grail of the Holden range.. rarity is only one aspect of desirability, purpose, Bathurst pedigree and historic significance seems to be the clincher.

Agreed, interestingly (but not surprisingly) the HT GTS 350 (manual) is the true bathurst and more desirable than the HT GTS 350 Auto. It's weird though because the HK327 still gets some solid prices... and to think I turned one down in 1996 because the guy wouldn't drop from $12,500 to $12,000. Yes, 12k :( I am a fool.

No surprise at all, the auto HT 350 is a different vehicle.
It used the low compression motor too..
The "bathurst" spec HT350 was manual...

True words. Funnily enough, a lot of people sell the auto under the "bathurst" monaro tag... and there are people out there who aren't discerning enough to know that there was a major difference between the cars. I am pretty sure that the suspension was also slightly more "luxurious" on the Auto GTS 350.

The P3 will always be the "god"of the ford brigade and the pick of the bunch
but yes its true when coming to the red corner, there is certainly a few goodies
personally i think the blue meanie(vk ss group A)is very underrated
but have seen a few of these asking low to mid 100K
with each passing year there is one or more less
speaking of kickin yourself
i knocked back a HG 350 one owner monaro 5 years ago
coulda got it for less then 20 K
(even had the $$$ in the bank)
oh well thems the breaks
