03:00-04:00 is the time the backup and daily maintenance jobs run and to get it done quickly, most of the server side resources are allocated to the task.

I looked the other day at an odd hour, guests in the high tens of thousands, and as you would expect just a handful of members.

The answer is, of course, yes. I blocked one group of rogue MSN bots last night and another range of IP addresses from Hong Kong this morning. We are still showing 44k guests so I will check that there isn't another range but the blocks only stop new ones from connecting and the already connected ones can't do anything and gradually drop off.
