Default AU Purge Solenoid

I've been reading through alot of threads about the noisy ticking associated with the purge solenoid in the AU's. Mine is noisy too. Has anyone successfully quietened one down so it still functions correctly but isn't noisy?

Apparently you put something to dampen the solenoid between the chassis rail or where ever its hitting?

Im yet to do it but would like too.

Better yet id like to through the system in the bin but not sure how ti will effect the ECU?

You can disable it via tuning software, or wrap the solenoid in adhesive backed foam available from places such as Clark Rubber.

Just had a look at my purge solenoid and it's not up against anything so still unsure how to stop that annoying ticking sound.

They also get noisier when they are worn out (remember they cycle many millions of times); a new one will likely solve it.

Tried Ford, sometimes there prices can be surprising.

I wonder if there is a US equivalent?

Has anyone taken a purge solenoid apart? If so any pics? Hoping there might be a way to silence it without hindering how it works.

I'm guessing they are a sealed unit. I wonder if a solenoid from a different model would work?

Yes; that's the solenoid which rapidly opens and closes.

Well I finally decided to bite the bullet and call the local Ford dealer here in Geelong and to get a brand new purge solenoid I'm looking at $200.
Can't afford that so I may have to find another solution. Are the BA and BF's running the same purge solenoid as the AU's?

not sure if will cause any issues but when I bought my fairlane, seems the previous backyard mechanic unplugged it. and the fuel cap has had a tiny hole drilled in it, to vent the tank.

$0 fix I guess. car drives fine?!

Might be worth a shot...will see if I can find a spare fuel cap to drill a tiny hole in.

Be aware that in a situation where the tank is crushed in an accident there is an increased risk of fuel tank fire and explosion if you outlet vent the fuel cap (that hole will act like a spray nozzle); this is one of the reasons why the cap has only a valved air inlet.

Is you and your passengers' lives worth $200? It might be better to try a wrecker or this perhaps http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-FALC...item35e984307a Also try Covs for a price of a new one.

you can just un plug it, although mine is disabled via tuning software..no need to drill a hole in the fuel cap, the tank still breaths vapour into the canister but if the solenoid is in active the vapour will come through the breather line that runs just in front of the airbox.
only problem I found with this is on hot days when I have under 1/4 tank of fuel I could smell fuel, so what I have done is ran that breather into the bottom of my airbox so any vapour is drawn through the air filter, been like that for a year now with no issues ..

Have you got a pic of how you fitted the breather hose in the airbox?

yes,
the breather is usually attached to a clip that holds it to the hole in the radiator support where I have the zip tie, ive taken a piece of canister hose and joiner from a wreck and drilled a small hole in the lower airbox and it goes about 4" into the box.

I might unplug the purge solenoid and see how it goes and if it doesn't go well with it unplugged I will buy the solenoid from you.

Just wrap it up and it will stop 90% of the noise,i used a piece of old rag to fully wrap it up and used some electrical tape to keep the rag from coming off.
It still ticks quietly but you cant hear it.
Costs nothing apart from the time it takes to remove the front pass side wheel and the plastic inner in the wheel arch.
Simples!

The amount of threads ive read about this and people still overthink the old purge solenoid ticking, its a **** easy simple fix like i said above.
Dont overthink it!

Here's a thought...
What if you unplug the purge solenoid and do away with it all together? Plug up the hose the goes to the engine as that is a vacuum. Would it affect the car in any way?

No. Won't harm or make a difference to how the engine runs. If you unplug the solenoid you won't need to disconnect it from the engine.. The solenoid blocks that line when off
