At various stages over the decades I've bought cars that have had remoulds, retreads, BF/TA's or Firestone rag tyres. None are as bad a the NEXGEN tyres that were on the Falcon a couple of years ago. Pitiful in the dry and downright dangerous in the wet. Should be banned.

HiFly, Ling Long, Ironman etc etc . The names they give these cheapo tyres always gives me chuckle. No way I'd risk my family's safety with them though.

Had hifly on a holden combo I was running around in for 12 months over lot of kays. No problems here and that's beating them up on crap country dirt roads too. Car was left out in the blistering sun, freezing cold we get here. Tyres were always properly inflated. Not saying to go out and buy them though, I wouldn't. I've seen this a bit on 4x4 tyres, usually due to people not inflating to hwy pressures when coming home from the bush.

Add Triangle tyres to that list of dodgy brands

Probably a low load rating on them too, they all have totally unsuitable load ratings for the size and profile.

NEXGEN? or Nexen?

If it's Nexen, then it's curious as I've had two N'Fera SU1's on the back for a little over a month, now I'll be putting 2 more on the front, replacing the Conti's.

So far I've found them great (with thanks to Perun in the Tyre section)

Yes, a very important and often misunderstood aspect of any tyre.
I've seen top name tyre brands exhibit the same failure on the inside sidewall.as well. Kumhos to be specific.

Either way, pays to " steer clear " of unproven no name brands regardless of country of origin.

Tyres, brakes and suspension should always be a no compromise purchase on any car. And then there is the issue of maintenance............

Ive had both Hifly and Achillies desert hawks on my cars.

Ive had 2 sets of deseert hawks on our 05 Territory and they were great tyres for the price.

The Hiflys have been on my BA for round 5 years and are still ok.

Maybe just a bad batch?

I had a two month old clean skin Bridgestone steer fail on me yesterday. Didn't blow thank f@&k. But had large cracks along where the tread meets the sidewall. Prob done 20,000km. Got 135,000 out of the last steers.

Nexens sounds better. Everytime I drove in the wet they were below hopeless. Constantly having to go slower than the flow of traffic on roundabouts and sharp corners in the wet. Understeer then oversteer.

driven cabs for many years and driven some AU/BA Falcons with cheap**** tyres on them, in the wet the cheapies are, er, fun, as in it'll lose traction at every opportunity it can, even mild throttle mid-corner will see a spectacular slide, good tyres won't do that

don't buy cheap tyres, they are deadly

Ive found the Sailun tyres particularly bad in the wet with no straight line traction whatsoever.

For cheap tyres ive also had a good run with achilles and nexen,as a general tyre for regular street duties they are fine.
As with most tyres once they are a few years old and get around or below 50% they can get a bit iffy(try sideways)
Until i found out about tyre manufacture dates not long ago, almost every set of tyres ive purchased new have been at least 2-3 years old...
Once your car makes decent power though like the turbos these days and modern v8s cheap tyres most times dont cut it.

I had Roadstones N7000 (aka Nexen) on my supercharged AU back in the day and for the price paid I was quite impressed with them. Lateral grip and braking was excellent. Taking off was a different matter lol but you got to learn how to regulate the accelerator better in the wet any way. That said, my AU's suspension was setup in a way to maximize the maximum grip from those tires. Sure I could have got more grip from better branded/more expensive tyres but I wasnt tracking or dragging the car so saw no point. I used the car for daily duties as well as occasional spirited sprints in the hills.

All tyres sold in Australia need to comply with Australian standards, cheap or expensive.
I tend to run at around 33psi, check every few months. Lowest I've ever seen at the time of topping up was 28psi. I don't think that's the issue here.

P.S. Remember this only happened on the inside wall. Those of you saying your cheap tyres are going great - that's what I thought last week!

A couple of months ago I bought a XP ute fitted with Hiflys (13inch rims).
One of the front tyres had developed an egg in the tread about 15cm long. The spare was also shredded and one of the other tyres was a different brand so it would seem that these 2 others had suffered a simular fate. I am unsure of the age of the tyres, it may have been a factor. To be safe I replaced them all with new tyres.

I just put HiFly A/Ts on my Triton, so far so good. I'm still playing with pressures at the moment, so we'll see how they go. Off road though I'm impressed.

We did have some Continentals on a Fiesta we owned that were already on there when we bought it, and they were cracked all over the outer sidewall (and probably the inside too).

When I bought my HiFly tyres they were sourced from Maxxis and I was under the impression they were made by them too, but can't confirm that anywhere.

Had them fitted to my Focus, crap tyre, could get it to spin in first which is torque limited with less than half throttle.
I got talked into putting the same tyres on my Mazda6. They are the worst tyres I've ever had. The car chirps off the line under light throttle (and has done since the tyres were new). In the wet they are horrible.

I'll be going back to the Potenzas that were on the car from new.
