Default Bit of Blue Smoke!

Got home from the AU BBQ, needed to go to the shops so I thought I'd take the SR for a cruise. Started it up, and she blew a bit of blue smoke but quickly cleared.

Now before you give me the gloom and doom stories of what could be wrong, I've noticed that the oil light lingers a little upon start up. The car sits for a few days on an uphill slope, not much though!

Car has been hesitant a little on start up, has done 77,000 kays.

What do you guys reckon? I know, a full blue print from G&D! LOL! Or a windsor transplant!

Should I be concerned! A little, a lot, not fussed if it's irregular and if the oil level is ok. This is the first time it's done it! Actually I think I may have overfilled the oil a little.

Your thoughts as always are appreciated.

GK

Just thinking about it a little.

If I've got a little too much oil in the car, that would increase oil pressure right? Would an increase in said pressure have the potential to push past the oil rings on startup?

Is this a plausable explanation?

I wouldnt be too concerned about it yet George. If it starts to happen every time you start the car then yes, get it looked at but if its only when the car is dead cold AND been sitting for a few days then I'd be more inclined to think about changing oil to a slightly thicker rating.

I currently run Castrol Magnatec 10w/40.

I have noticed in the wagon, that I'm a litre down on oil changes at 10,000kays, have thought about upping the viscosity a little.

I didn't expect the smoke from the 77k sedan, the 148k wagon perhaps!

So if I was upping the viscosity, what would people recommend and why?

15w/50? 10w/50? 20w/50? Is there a 10W/45?

Cheers,

GK

Went for a quick spin around the corner today, no smoke, not even a hint!

Good news, but guys I'm still interested in options for a change of oil viscosity.

i dought its anything severe. if your rings were gone, it would be blowing blue smoke all the time. even then, people don't do anything about it

in a higher k engine that symptom sounds like valve stem seals, but you may be right if its overfull, perhaps oil is getting where it shouldnt.

standard for the I6s is 10W30, so by using 10W 40, you have already gone up a grade. If you are going to change again, go a 5W50 or something like that. Thinner at startup, but thicker when it gets to operating temp - or is it the other way around??

Yep, the first number is at startup, the W is for Winter i think, meaning cold?

Interesting though (i did know the original grade was 10/30) apparently used by Ford to increase fuel economy, but many on this forum use oil a fair bit heavier. I'm wondering why this is, especially before I consider it.

I6's used to use 20W50 didn't they?

Are you using Magnatec also Daniel? It is Daniel isn't it? I'm not 100% sure because of the avitar. It's changed hasn't it?
