If we go back to a similar era. C6 RS6 with the 5L V10 is even better than the current gen imo
That whole era was amazing when you look back at it.

The three Germans throwing punches at each other resulted in some crazy engines. I mean, who would have thought someone would ever want or need a twin turbo V10, a 8000rpm V10 or a 6.3 V8 in a family wagon.

I've got a CLK, but it doesn't look or sound like that one

Im usually not a Rotor fan (I'll stick to angry V8's), but the Mazda 767B (and similar) Race cars with insane N/a Rotor's sound truly epic. This video is just a start, idle and rev but there are plenty of videos' of them....

I stopped watching Supercars a couple of years ago, I just lost interest in it and the shameful treatment of Ford over the last few years.................the only car company dumping money into the category.

What I enjoy more is watching clips from the heydays of the category, when the race cars looked like the road cars. They also sounded better too without that hideous gear lash from the transaxle cars.

Back in the early to mid 2000's, those SBR engines were clearly the leader of the pack, to the point where other teams started buying them from SBR. I used to love watching the onboard laps with him at the helm, the camera pointing up and over that huge bonnet bulge.

There are two other sounds from this era that gets my blood pumping, the first being from FPR for a couple of years around 2010. Whatever they did with their engine during that era made such a wonderful top end scream that was unlike any other engine track. The way it screamed off the walls on a street circuit is goosebumps for me. I just wish the commentators would shut the hell up so I can hear it properly.

It's at its best when pulling taller gears as it prolongs that howl..............

The early 2000's HRT engines had a similar scream to them. I of course hated that sound because it usually meant a HRT car was going to win. Now, I can appreciate it for what it was, mechanical music. At its best when Mark Skaife would do one of his 6th to 4th to 2nd throttle blips, berrrwapp!

Listen how long the thing is on the limiter running down Conrod.............

All this has me wondering, do race car drivers take note of how their race engines sound, or are they just a tool of trade?

Two distinctive sounds I like are surprisingly not Fords.
They are the whir of a V12 Jaguar starting up and the sound of a gear reduction starter on a Chrysler product.

I have a thing for starter motor sounds too.

Have always loved the sound of the EB through AU III Windsor V8 sounded winding over, very distinctive.

Biased, but I love the extended wind over of the Miami V8's, apparently this was to build oil pressure before firing off. A heavy contrast to that laaaaaazy cranking of a GM LS V8. (Plugging my own video here)

The fast whir of the Aston Martin 6.0 V12 does it for me too.

I think the environment that you hear an engine is a significant factor.
Around 20 years ago, an Aston Martin Driver after starting his car when parked on Whitehorse Rd Balwyn, would give the Accelerator a few blips and the glorious note would reverberate through the shopping centre.

Not my thing but some modify them to make it sound like they rev harder than what they actually do.

CL600 is a beast of a car, 300kw, 600nm and 2.3 tonne.

One good sound is the door closing on any Mercedes designed before the mid 1990s.

Two of my favorite sounding engines are:

the 240z that Daruis had built.. always makes me smile... and

the Yager Performance XY-GTHO at bathurst

direct link if the above fails https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLPTjE1GZk

This is what happens when you fit a blown Nascar engine to a 240z Daddo..
If the Youtube thumbnail link won't play the game, the original can be found by smashing this link:
