Default Ford Mustang isn't good enough for the NSW police

http://www.businessinsider.com.au/th...-police-2016-3

Harry Tucker
Ford’s new Mustang might have an 18-month waiting list for customers, but the NSW police aren’t one of them.

News Corp is reporting that the iconic US car has failed a crucial highway patrol test that all cars must pass before being put into the force.

While the Mustang passed a brake test at the police driving academy in Goulburn, the car’s automatic transmission, which is a requirement for police vehicles, overheated after just three minutes of intense driving.

The car was then forced into a “limp home mode” and taken to a local Ford dealership for repairs.

Failing this test means the NSW police won’t be buying any more of Ford’s performance car, leaving the future of its highway patrol force likely to be in the hands of Volvo or other European brands.

With Ford and Holden closing their Australian production plants and axing the Falcon and Commodore models, most police forces across the country are scrambling to try and find replacements.

General duty cars are much easier to replace, with the likes of the Toyota Camry and Hyundai SanteFe joining the force.

However the highway patrol faces dilemmas due to the required performance needed, with the Commodore and Falcon providing bang for your buck performance dollars. The strict brake tests are the biggest obstacles to overcome, leaving few cars under $100,000 left, with the Volvo S60 Polestar and Volkswagen Golf R Wagon the leading runners.

Mustang rental I had in the states copped a lot more than 5 minutes of spirited driving. Drove it like I stole it and it held up better than an FG2 xr6 rental, and steered, handled and braked on a dime. Maybe Ford purposely put in a Stubborn Mule calibration to the loan car to the police to deter them from using it. The police aren't exactly a customer you can extract much profit from or positively impact your car's resale values and market price. Wouldn't want them as a customer if I was a niche car manufacturer, let Toyota or Daewoo Australia have them. Mustang may become the getaway car of choice in coming years

USA, the place you can be pulled over for 30 MPH (miles per hour not kph) over the limit on the interstate and get let off with a light warning. Maybe being a tourist from Australia helps

This article about it http://www.centraltelegraph.com.au/n...-test/2970835/ says it failed after 2 laps at the Goulburn police track and that the Volvo actually outperformed the Mustang....

You would think being a car likely to cop a hiding (excuse the pun)it would have had a decent tranny cooler fitted ..... Alas .....

And there is your answer. US spec Mustangs.

From what I've read, were getting a pov pack version that can be had in the states at at least half in not almost a 3rd of the price we pay in OZ.

Not exactly specced up equipment to handle what the police need.

How many Police Departments or State police use Mustangs over in the US?

Yeah. Not many. If any.

Here's a fun fact, any police candidates had to have a manual licence back in the day.

What does the Goulburn police track look like and what are the test procedures? Maybe there is some weird test like a J-turn at 60kph to pursue someone going the other way, engine braking from 180kph or accidental forward to reverse at 40kph in case there is a rookie cop behind the wheel.

So they have a Mustang GT for $AU 20,000 to $30,000 in the US ?

What's the difference between their Performane Pack version and their $AU 20,000 Provo pack we get here ?

No police pursuit car in the world is a standard build. They are all uprated. In fact in the US the car companies do a massive show-and-tell at Pomona that decides what the police forces buy.
Looks like NSW should have bought this one http://www.torquenews.com/106/steeda...police-package

They are just not obsessed with revenue like local cops.
I remember leaving LA in a Mustang, I was in the carpool lane sitting behind an Escalade doing between 80 and 90mph, limit was 55 or 60. I still had a M3 catch up behind me. We drove like this for ages and had no problems. I think the slowest I drove between LA and Vegas was 10mph over the limit, passed multiple cops and not one pulled me over.

If that was true, which it's not, it would be almost as cheap to import your own and convert it here... Which it's not.

HWP do things to cars no one in the their right mind would do. Such as driving down the freeway everyday in 3rd gear at 5000rpm (constant).

As if Ford would want to sell them Mustangs anyway, when they can sell them for full retail to private buyers.
