AU 6 Hard Starts & Surging @ WOT

Have an AU I6 sedan that has always been a little hard to start - in the sense that it doesn't "jump into life", more of a "lazy slow" start if you get my drift. Always starts first go.

Now is also just started to surge at highway speeds at WOT. Other than that car runs great.

I'm thinking fuel pump. Seems fuel related to me.

Car has 150k on the clock, new plugs and leads, O2 sensor and fuel filter.

I tend to agree that the symptoms appear to be fuel pump related. Can you please clarify, WOT or Highway speed. To me, WOT is foot flat to the floor, hence Wide Open Throttle and highway speed is 100 - 120kph steady? Is this also happening at constant throttle? Sorry to be pedantic, but the two are very different.

For the sake of $130, I would throw a Walbro GSS342 in.

WOT meaning between 100-120Km/h going uphil, foot flat to the floor. As the revs rise and transmission kicks down, engine starts cutting in and out. Really hard to tell if its ignition or fuel.

Leaning towards fuel because of the lazy starts. Also, if I turn on the ignition (without starting) and let the fuel system prime for 10 secs, it seems to start easier, but still a bit lame.

Yeah I agree. Never owned an older Falcon *ever* that didn't throw a fuel pump on me at some point.

Good preventative maintenance even if its not the cause. On that note, can someone shed some light as to the difference between

Both are fuel pumps for an AU sedan, but look totally different. What gives?

Is the Walbro really that much better than a VDO or genuwine Ford? Always had others do fuel pumps for me in the past so never really cared much for them.

This time I'm doing it myself.

The second one is the complete assembly, whereas the first one is just the pump unit which fits inside the assembly. Mind you, the first one is not quite right. It has a horizontal output pipe, whereas the factory is vertical.

This is the Walbro GSS342 I installed in my factory cradle. Email Justin at sales@tuffcarparts.com He will give you a good deal.

As for the arguement which is better - I cannot really comment. All I do know is it is not uncommon for the factory units to fail or loose performance - as in your case.
