Default Searching for Melbourne's best Chicken Kiev

Alright everyone, I've been searching for over 10 years since a butcher in Broadmeadows shopping centre (Wishbone) closed down and their garlic butter chicken kiev of the gods disappeared with them.

So far only one other butcher out of the many I've tried (Kent's Poultry in Sunbury) was able to make an equivalent product who has also since unfortunately disappeared.

Unfortunately they all seem to have a light coating of bread crumbs and the bastards crack open when frying and then baking them, leaking their garlic butter goodness out before you eat the bastard.

The search is back on - I'm willing to travel Melbourne wide to get my hands on the best chicken product handed down by the gods.

Do you have a decent local butcher or know of one who turns out the best Chicken Kiev?

I hear you. My best butchers have long gone and I've never been a fan of a chicken kiev, but the thrill of the hunt must continue.

AFF needs a food thread.

Had one today from some joint called 'The Butcher Club' in Watergardens, it was OK but the bastard split open like a kombucha drinkin' lefties skull in the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone after the police put a stop to it.

The quest continues.

Just do it yourself!

It's hardly difficult Franco......get the crumb amount how you like, the butter/garlic ratio, get a good pan or if oven you're set!

I love cooking (I'm probably rubbish but I enjoy it)

I cracked the ****s last year and thought I'd give it a go, got salted butter, crushed up heaps of garlic, chopped up some dill and made the filling, made up the crumb part with a mix of wholemeal and white bread crumbs but I couldn't get the bastards to hold together properly.

Requires more kitchen skills I think - I made some ****en rad Chebureki from scratch but the Kiev is a bit too elusive for me at the moment.

Are you looking for something served on a plate or to cook at home?

Natasha’s Kitchen has at least three recipes on YT, plus she’s a bit gorgeous.

Hey, franco. I love a good pub chicken schnitzel, salad and fat chips. (gravy on the side) but discovered a place in Bendigo recently, I thought was a local independent cafe.
It turns out it is a chain but I've found its great and all made on the premises.
I think they do Kiev. Found one in Albury.
https://schnitz.com.au/our-menu/

Apart from that there are quite a few chicken shops around doing take/cook at home Kiev's. There are 3 I know of just in Wang.

I reckon you would find quite a few just along Sydney road.

What about using an air fryer thing. Placed the right way up, might not get a chicken putinesca.

Got one from our local butcher. Had many times.
I'll get a pic having one tonight, they are brilliant. Also have a cream cheese and garlic flavour, it's to die for

Their are 3 butchers close to my place (not including Woolies which I haven't tried).

2 very average Kievs, 1 fantastic - better crumb and flavour. Guess it's all trial and error plus individual taste etc!

Not the best one I've had from my local. Also side note, home made chips

I'm gonna have a go at making my own I think

Hey Franco,

I'm with you; it's hard finding just the right kiev, especially one that doesn't burst open and spill it's goodness whilst cooking.

My wife used to have her own photography business many years ago, and next door was a butcher. We tried there kievs and they were to die for. Shortly after, my wife closed the business and she didn't travel to that town any longer. Talking to the butcher, we found out that these kievs weren't made by them, instead they were a mass produced product that ordered in. A little more research and we found that we could get the same items from the local food distributor.

So, for some 20 plus years, by hook or crook, we've found a way to get our hands on these kievs through the food supplier. Every now and then, when we're not able to get an order in, I'll try a butchers kiev, and have just not been able to find anything that compares to these.

All of our family and friends who try them also think they are the best kievs. I normally order a box (of 20) and by the time I've dished them out to everyone who wants one, I'm lucky to have a few left.

They are made by Matre De Foods, based in Colac in Vic (now owned by Hazeldene's Chicken Farm). The website has details of who distributes these, maybe you could contact them and see if anyone in your area receives supplies of these.

Here's a brochure for their Kievs.

Looking at DJM's pic, they look very similar. No bone either, which is a plus for me.

Any luck? I know it's all about the thrill of the chase or we CBF, but have a crack at making your own in the meantime. A bonus with that is you decide on what bread crumbs and garlic butter you prefer.

I've been following this chef for years. He mainly concentrates on comfort foods:

If you go down this route, watch those fingers:
