Default AU Resale

Been noticing this through a lot of threads here. How bad is the situation?

My dad bought a brand new BA, and was going to trade in his AU2 Forte Wagon with 170xxx on the clock and had an offer of 12k from the dealer.

I proceeded to buy that off him and have since expected to fetch myself about 10 during the year, going off what the dealer had previously offered him.

So the question, am I going to get peanuts???

To be honest Donshe, you can probably expect peanuts. The floor has dropped out of the used car market. Even BA's are going for a song now($30K for a GT!!), AU's have no resale value and E Series values are dramatically effected by how much fuel is in the tank. Overall not a good time to be selling but a great time to be buying and modding!

Always expect to lose money on a car.Since GST the value of a used car has dropped heaps because the price of a new car dropped.
The up side of all this is I bought my used XR6 for a song and will probably never sell it.

Well, its expected to lose on the buying price, but when I was offered by a Ford dealer, no less, 10+, shocking to read this sort of thing. Still, hope its better then my buy price of 4k Lol

Wagons are like utes, you'll always get a bit more than a sedan.

Another reason why the wagon is better than the sedan. :

Stiddy you raise a good point with the way fuel prices are. I don't doubt that.

% wise, yes. XR6's have always seemed to hold the best resale % out of the falcon range.

i went on a bit of a spree bout 3 mnths or so ago and looked at trading in my AU1 Futura on an AU3 5 speed xr 6, i haven't done any major mods other than extractors and cat back, 18" rims, lowered suspension, its only done 150k and i was offered $10gs for it, he basically told me to rip the $5000 stereo out, replace the extractors and exhaust with standard ones and put back the standard springs and thats how much he would give me trade, now this was at a private dealership, only a month earlier, same deal, looked at trading it in on a AU2 XR6 5 speed but this time it was at my local Ford dealership and was disgusted in the $4500 trade in price i was offered and thats with all the gear on it, i dunno about u but it seems to me, unless u pick your car up nice and cheap from a family member or friend ur better off drivning the thing into the ground or spending more cash on it and keeping it. Waiting till someone comes along with the right amount of cash to suit yourself at the time. I have decided however to do my best to maintain it, spend a lil more on mods etc (coming soon btw) and enjoy it as much as i possibly can.

Ill be keeping my car until either:

1. It dies. (with only 116k km on it, its going to be a while)
2. It has paid for itself and I want a new car. (@ $2k a year saving, 5 years min)
3. Get offered company car. (Fairly probable)
4. I win Lotto. (Unlikely)

I only paid $8950 for a 1999 AU1 6 with 74,000kms.. traded my commodore in and got 4k, only parting with $4950. The car itself was in great condition. A friend bought a 2003 AUIII 6 for $13,990 with 127,000kms.. just to give u some idea of prices.

Another reason, bigger cars are losing value is the twisted idea some people have that ' Big Cars are fuel guzzlers ' however I find my AU very good on fuel.. infact its awesome on the highway/freeways.

10K for an AU series 1 Futura is pretty good in the current market, particularly withou the goodies which you could probably sell for a bit too!
