Default B&M Shifter Install - Long weekend Job

Hey All,

Well i finally got the whole weekend to myself, no work, no other work. just time to work on my car.

For anyone interested i will write up instructions at the completion of the install, todays half day progress (busy wiring up other crap on the todo list)

Removed old shift
removed old linkage
installed 3/4 of mega shifter
1/2 installed cable
1/2 installed bracket

for those who dont know about the megashifter.....

its pretty much the same as any other shifter except.

a) its chrome
b) it has a finger release instead of button like on e series
c) it is a hybrid between tip tronic & auto

ill explain part C
P, R, N & drive all move as norm (you need to pull release pin with fingers)
however once you get into N or D you just push the T piece of the shifter Forward & Backwards to Cycle UP or DOWN the gears...

to change down gears while driving
go to drive with finger release (as normal) then ....
TAP T piece down to go to 3 (automatically centers t piece again)
TAP T piece down to go to 2 (automatically centers t piece again)
TAP T piece down to go to 1 (automatically centers t piece again)

go from 1 to D
TAP T piece up to go to 2 (automatically centers t piece again)
TAP T piece up to go to 3 (automatically centers t piece again)
TAP T piece up to go to D (automatically centers t piece again)

ive never used or installed a B&M so it will be interesting to see if it feels good to drive or wether it gives me the shits.

anyhow back to it.
later

well after a lot of thinking and trials....the best i can get is all gears except 1st.
this is mounted to standard 4 speed EA auto transmission.
might i add....i must only be out by like 2 tenths of a bees dick. cos it needs like 5mm more pull to swing into 1st (tested by pushing linkage at gearbox with little finger)

i think ive tried all ways to get it to work, ill have 1 more go 2moz. then im giving up.

my transmission is nearly stuffed anyways (slipping, clunky)
so what im thinking of doing sunday is ripping her out n getting an AU or AU2 transmission instead. maybe it will be easier to hook up to shifter.

the b&m are good, but the connection to the transmission is a pain in the *** cos the lazy engineers at b&m only deal with US cars. which means custom bits.

hey does anyone know or have done
EA drive shaft....connected to AU transmission.....connected to EA motor & ECU?

or do i need to replace engine as well as gearbox & also ECU?

thanks
brad

ohh i thought i might add.....after i have got this shifter working, i will design a simple circuit to display what gear shifter is currently in, that or mod EA2BA's gear ID circuit.

all it would need is a set of micro switches on each PIN step of the shifter, as the shifters PIN step closes the switch which would associate to each gear level it would display the driver letter on a single led display (same as EA2BA).
will look into it asap

nite

Im using the B&M Mega Shifter
http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id...subcat=1&pid=7

Yeah BF 6speed sounds good. but this b&m shifter can only do max 4 speed

hence me wanting to get the au gearbox asap (from memory they are still 4 speed)

Yes, fit a BA or BF shifter and control circuit, EA2BA and Ghia5L have both done it, there are threads on here about it.

If the shifter is stumping you,I think the AU auto install is best forgotten.

Why not try one of these steering wheels, would fit the theme of the interior well..

you don't have to press any buttons to change it from 1,2,3 just hit backwards and then to change down gears hit it forwards 1,2,3 would work best with a shift kitted auto not a standard one. thhey work well in worked cars but stock im not so sure.

The shifter will only ratchet forward or back one gear at a time, so when you are manually shifting you cannot miss a gear or when fitted to a trimatic like I had one in my HZ, you can't do the dreaded second to neutral shift (trimatic has no detent from Drive to Neutral). Leaves you free to concentrate on other things when you're not trying to hit the right gear.
And as Dan said... Mmmmmm, shiney :P

the shifter is not so much as stumping me, its giving me the shits, however the path that tuffed went down is a much better idea, my problem was i was trying to mount right on gearbox, instead of mixing ford & b&m parts.

the benifits are what fairmont1998 & ebmanul was saying, and yes i know they better suite hotted cars, and i would love an old school, but the fact of the matter is the ea is my pride & joy (sometimes) so why not put the cool old school parts (in my mind) into the ea & be happy with a mix of the 2.

if i could buy them in flat black/grey i would have, but they come standard in chrome

ohh might i add, if worst comes to worst & i cant get all gear lined correctly, a trans specialist said he could finish the job for me. (either way cant really loose)

anyhow off to wreakers to get some bits n pieces
later

Actually they will. Well i know on the Quicksilver there is a pin you pull out to make it a four speed shifter, i think its for one of the chev boxes.

the megaa shifter as far as I know is not suitable for the BTR 4 speed... alot of the B&M jobbies are universal for 2-->4 speeds but I don't think the Mega Shifter is one of them..

EDIT: looking at the link you posted it doesn't list the BTR as an application :P

Technically, the shifter will and wont work on the 4speed.

It will in the way that it does support 4 speed transmissions and with a bit of messing around you can make a linkage and bracket to suit the BTR, but you need to work out and drill the gear linkage to give the lever the right arc.You need 2 people for the job, one inside the car going through the gears and one under the car lining up the linkage and cable through each gear to find a common point on the linkage arm, that follows the same arc as the shifter cable moves.
The shifter also required custom linkages and brackets to suit the FMX in my car. A bit of messing around modifying a C4 lever but ended up getting it right.

It wont work on the BTR in the way that the ecu decides when the trans will change gears, not the shifter position, therefore you can be driving and have the shifter in 4th, but the ecu will only select the gear it thinks the trans should be in dependant on road speed, rpm and load

Also make sure you get some tin and close the old hole in the tunnel or you will get a lot of heat and noise up through there, and the cops dont really like it either..
