Default Bathurst 2009

Hey guys...

So, Bathurst is this weekend.... my favourite weekend of the year...
No matter how many times I watch the coverage I always love seeing the flashbacks of the old bathursts....
Brings back great memories....

SO - brings me to the point of this thread...

FAVOURITE BATHURST MEMORIES....
I have so many... but I think my favourite was the year the race was called off (1992 i'm pretty sure) because of the rain and the carnage and the controversy... "you're a pack of @SSHOLES"...

and

WHO WILL WIN IT THIS YEAR??
my prediction will be Team Vodafone again.... making them the ONLY people to have won the Peter Brock trophy.... and making it 4 in a row...

Opinions please....

Bathurst back again, barby hot, coldies tinkkling away, big screen - few mates around, count down has begun.

Best memories - Had received a Chrissy present mid eighties, a VCR copy of Ford at the Great race. The most memorable and enduring moment for me would be the footage of the commencement of 72 Bathurst. Rain was pelting down, cars went round the first bend, Moffat running second or third, Brock running in front, no sound - only the sound of the wipers - next view, pan shot up the hill - empty road, rain pelting down - then faint noise build up - then bang - blown away by Moffat in front with the rest of the crew screaming down the road in a blinding torrent of spray, full throttle, V8's screaming on skinny radials.

Have DVD's of all of the races - have enjoyed all categories throughout the years - but having watched the 72 race with my dad in black & white, the 72 footage in colour still is the moment for me.

Winner - hopefully will be a Ford - DJR, Frosty or even Lowndes & Whincup with the last hurrah - four in a row would be a lasting memory. :

Bathurst is this weekend....... This would have to be the first time in 30 years I didn't know that. Sad really because it shows my general interest in the current formula is about zero. Last year was the first year I didn't watch the entire race

Im the same, care factor is at a low and its got nothing to do with the vodafone thing either.

Ill probably watch the first and last hour, although if we are getting smashed I wont bother watching the end.

I'm looking forward to it but have to tape it and try to watch it during the week. Makes it easier to skip all the adverts too!

There are so many but in no particular order here are 3 stand outs for me ;

-1977 - the 1-2 finish with Moffat and Bond , although I still recon Bondy should have crossed first but we won't go there.

- 1986 - Gricey in the Chickadee commodore just driving straight past John Harvey at the Reid Park like he was standing still to take back the lead. Gircey set the first ever 100mph lap that year.

- 1992 - 5 laps to go and a young Craig Lowndes in his first 1000 passed John Bowe round the outside at the top of mountain straight at (now) Griffins bend for the lead. He lost the lead a lap later when balked coming onto pit straight but WHAT A MOVE !!

Isn't the main reason that most people are losing interest the fact that it is really a ONE HORSE RACE, with different jockeys and livery??

Lets face it... if you pulled the front and rear bars off the car.... is there really that much difference???

I haven't really supported much of the V8's series this year but Bathurst is a different sort of race...

I suppose I follow the drivers more than the teams...

cant wait its gonna be awesome im leaving thursday night.
im only 16 and this year is my 11th straight year although i would have to agree with mos tthe catagory needs a major shake up to re ignite the interest of many spectators i think we should invite more manufacturers in and do away with all this parity crap, really if the commodore is 2 inches longer than the falcon its not gonna cause all the holden drivers to watch in dismany as ford drives off into the distance because of some tiny weight advantage. but bathurst is different its always good.

I must agree with some here, the Bathurst glory days are done and dusted. I used to be a BIG V8 SC fan but have all but lost interest now thanks to the way the category is nowadays. Having said that, I wont lie and say that I won't be watching some of it but that's just because I enjoy motor sport generally..........

I'll watch the start, any crashes and the last 10 or so laps...rest of the time me and my mates will be getting hammered around the pool, BBQ...should be sweet!

As for who wins...I'd love to see frosty do it.

Back in the Group C and Group A days and even early in the Supercar formula I'd get so worked up over it that I'd be hanging out to pee but would _refuse_ until an add break came on then I'd make sure I was back in time to continue watching. I swear apart from the add breaks I didn't miss not even 1 second of the race from 1977 till 1997ish. Then I started to loose interest. I'm sure there's many hardcore fans that feel the same. Somewhere around when Holden introduced the VT and it wasn't as quick as the previous VS is when I noticed things go a bit wonky. They managed to speed it the VT up a bit but soon after that is when they started to make the changes to the cars slowly bit by bit untill we are in the situation we are in now where Commodore and Falcons no longer get to race, just thin versions of production outer panels on dedicated race cars

I love Bathurst weekend. We always have a BBQ, few mates around, a great day of relaxing...Till Jack starts yelling at the telly!!

Not really fussed who wins this year...as long as they are from the blue oval..

Hate to correct you but, The first 4 cars around Hell Corner in 1972 were 4 YX GT's. Allan Moffat Leading, Followed by John Goss, Fred Gibson and John French.

But Yes, that was an awesome start.

My Favorite memory was the Group C cars. They were loud and brutish beasts that hammered all the way around the mountain with the drivers the likes of Johnson, Brock, Bartlett, Grice, Bob Morris, Alan Moffat. Those were the days of racing for me. The cars were still Factory (worked the the eyeballs) engines, gearboxes, diffs, suspention and so on.

Such angry cars that were smile enducing animals of their Rightfull days!

I will go for anything Ford as long as it's not Jason Bright. and doesn't have the likes of Glen Seaton in it.

Would like to see Lownds win again.

Hate to correct you but I believe they were XY GT's , typo's don't you hate them, but yes the memory does get a bit hazy - but hey, either way I still get to yell at the big screen with a few mates, bbq blazing -doesn't really faze me with today's car set up - still the same spirit, red against the blue.

My favourite Bathurst moments are...

Murphy smashing the record during qualifying in 2003- This sent chills up my spine.

The ending of the 2007 race- Although I was slightly annoyed it was an all blue podium the last 10 laps, or so were nail biting.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned this, but Lowndes'/Whincup's inagural win in 2006- After the race was declared the tears started to flow. Very emotional weekend for me.

my favorite has to be Skaife getting rear ended by Jack Perkins on the first lap a couple of years back.....PURE GOLD!

But I have watched since I was a young bloke and I can remember an old tape of my dads had a compilation of crashes and bathurst moments to the "SAD SONGS" song. I wore the tape out watching that. I believe it was one of the years Moffat drove an RX7, 1983 from memory.

Like most here I suspect, I watched every minute of Bathursts from '77 through to say '97. To each generation it's own, but I do miss having different equipment and classes in the race.

Just seems very hollow to me when Holden or Ford hold up some banner on the victory podium saying they have 20 wins or 25 wins or whatever they are up to, when only those two can even enter the race.

gunna watch it but as said before the 888 thing got me in a bad mood ,all these sports are doing the swap around thing ,how do you follow a side or person when they keep changing .

this is also the reason i have stopped watching rugby league and why i could never follow afl .for christs sake pick a side stay with em build up a fan base and we will watch you !!! and stop letting money being the only motivator in sport ... where the pride and passion gone ?
