Do l have a a/c problem...

Hi every one;
First post, so here goes, l have a 1999 series 1 ford sedan and only has now 48500 Kms. Great car, drives like a new car, quiet and fuss free motoring.

One small problem, while the a/c works and goes get nice and cold. But the amount of cool air comming out of the regesters, l normaly have the fan speed set to '3' and the amount of air is just adequate and '4' is flat out but very noisy and not much better. been a sedan i also have the regesters in the centre console also 'open'. I also have the air on fresh air , but doesn't matter if i have it set to recurclate.

The other problem and maybe this is how the a/c works, but when i have the a/c 'on' and the lngnition off but, but in the accesory position, the fan still runs, on low speed, even with the fan speed control turned off the a/c fan still will run on low speed. turn the key all the way to the off position and every thing turns off.

The only way to turn the fan off is to have the max a/c~ a/c buttons off. (No little lights in these switches lit ).

So while i can live with the the low fan speed when the accesory is on.

Living with the poor amount of air comming out of the viarous regesters.

Question, is there a up graded fan drum or fan motor assembly.

You're right, this is how the aircon works. When you turn the switch to AC the fans will automatically come on low, and I think by 'regesters' you mean air vents.

Thanks for the reply, great. Other cars in my life are ( current ) 94 Pajero , that is used mainly to pull our caravan around with and the wife has a 95 holden commy door. I used to have a little mazda 323 and also a vn commy door. All cars had/have a/c that realy pushes out the air. The air con in these cars is 200% better that what my au is puting out now.

While the au air con works and was also checked out befor l bought the car ( privately ) lts just that while i normaly have the fan speen on 3 for the amount of air that is comming out of the vents is realy poor and feels like the fan is on ot's lowerst speed.

The fan speed controle does work and all speeds so no problem there, it's just like the fan lacks guts, for want of a nother word.

Maybe there is no answer and maybe no easy fix. It's just that l thought i would put my quiery out their to people that may have a better insite to the working of a/c in the series 1 au fords.

What about the later series or even later models ( BA for example ).

Have you tried to block vents, then 1 by 1 open 1 and check the flow? It could be a blocked pipe/ vent

I had an AU company car in the early 2000s, and it's aircon was equal to the 2x VS Commodores I also owned at that time.

I'd be looking for reasons why it's not performing well.

Firstly, I'd bypass the speed settings & resistors, and give 12V straight to the blower fan, and get a feel for how much air comes out the vents (you need to do this with the car running to ensure the vent settings are selected correctly).

Then plug the car's blower fan wiring back into the fan, and run it on the highest speed.

There should be no discernable difference between straight 12V, and the highest speed. If there is a noticeable difference, then you have issues with the switch, and possibly the speed resistors (although these are taken out of the circuit on the highest speed).

Pulling apart & rebuilding A/C systems over the years, I've found a lot of them at 10+ years old have clogged up evaporator & heater cores, restricting the airflow through the HVAC system. There's not a lot you can do about this without removing the entire HVAC unit from the car, tearing it down, and blasting the cores with water in the reverse direction - similar to hosing bugs out of a radiator.

There's lots of dust & small leaf debris that works it's way in over the years (and for this reason I run the pollen filter in my FG to try to prevent as much as possible from getting in the works).
