I am sad to say it may be close to never. We have to many short sighted chuckle heads in our country that don't get it.

Instead of "landing man on an asteriod" we should be back on the moon and getting to work.

One mans humble opinion.

To those who flew and those we lost.........

Last flight should have been one way, fill it with politicians and lawyers and just keep all engines burning till they run out .
Only down side I see is if ET finds them and think everyone from earth is like this they may think it best to destroy earth

I read that they're selling the shuttles for $21 million each (or hoping to), but you can get the main engines for free as long as you paid for packaging and postage.

So I emailed DHL and they said it would cost nearly $17,000 to send it to Melbourne, assuming they're in Florida which is probably inaccurate anyway. And that doesn't include packaging costs. But it's still less than I was expecting. Now that's an engine I'd love to see in a Ford. The huge fuel tank might make it a bit unweidly though...

Quote:
Four lucky museums are celebrating Tuesday's announcement that they will receive a space shuttle after NASA ends its 30-year-old shuttle program. Nearly two dozen museums had hoped to get one of the famous spaceships.

NASA chief Charles Bolden, a former space shuttle commander himself, made the announcement at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, whose visitor center will be home to space shuttle Atlantis.

"I'm proud to announce where these national treasures will be displayed and enjoyed by millions of Americans once the shuttle program concludes," he said.

As he started to say that Atlantis would make its final home right there at Kennedy's visitor center, the crowd went wild, and Bolden himself was clearly moved.

"You have no idea what that applause did for me," he said. "It's been a rough day."

He then announced that space shuttle Discovery will go to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, Endeavour will go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles, and a prototype shuttle that never flew in space, called Enterprise, will be going to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

These museums are celebrating, but Bolden knew he was disappointing 17 other contenders.

"There were many, many worthy institutions that requested an orbiter, and only four to go around," he said.

And The Shuttles Go To ...

Atlantis — Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Discovery — Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, near ashington, D.C.

Endeavour — California Science Center, Los Angeles

Enterprise — Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, New York

I just hope they get the next series of missions rolling ASAP. Although last I heard was that Obama cut the budget significantly. ******* bean counters, western world is going backwards, we have peaked and we are on the downward spiral lead by do gooders and those looking at the bottom line.
For anybody who likes and enjoys looking up at the stars I definitely recommend a trip to Cape Canaveral, go stand next to the shuttle or even better a Saturn V.

Actually Obama is a bit ahead of us really. He has worked out that having half the GDP being spent on the public service is crazy, we are still doing it......

Now the US have to rely on the communists to get astronauts into space! How ironic!

Well actually no.

They rely on Russians.

Russians used to elect communists into government but realised just exactly how stupid that was as all they did was waste money on crazy schemes, tell lies and propaganda to the people and increase taxes until the economy collapsed completely so they don't elect communists anymore.

Probably why they can afford send astronauts into space now.

Communists are sneaky though, they realised that they had to change their names to trick the dumb people into electing them.

So if Australia ever wants to be able to afford to send astronauts into space we will have to do the same as the Russians.

A guy at work was there for a shuttle launch early in the morning. He said the rockets gave off such a glow that it looked like a sun rise. Would have loved to have seen a launch.
