Default How much is a piece of silver?

Ever wondered what a piece of silver is worth?

Traditionally 30 pieces of silver is the reward given for doing something that at the time seemed like a good idea but later turned out to be a bit of a stuffup.

Well a piece of silver must be worth AUD $30.00 because at that price 30 of them would be equal to $900.00.

It didn't take long for the marketeers to spool up.

Today in Nambour, sign outside a car sound shop. "We take Rudd money"

Today and yesterday, newspapers and leaflets full of holidays to bali/NZ/cruises for $899, LCD/Plasmas for $899, set of 4 mag wheels......yep you guessed it, $899.

Not $700, nor $1000, nor $800 nor even $901........

Ah of course, stimulating the economy..... of bali, NZ, cruise liners, Gerry Harvey et al. and importers of chinese crap.

Would it not have been nice if the 30 pieces of silver, I mean $900 could only be spent of something that is Australian?

Food, beer, rum even, Australian accomodation or transport, whatever as long as the buck stayed here......

Too much to ask I suppose.

Not at all. I am booking 7 night holiday on the gold coast in September. We are driving up. So while the money will contribute to part of the trip, we still have fuel, food and Fun pass at the theme parks to buy. Plus what ever else we spend while we are there.

Dont Australians work on the docks, in transport from docks to warehouses, from the warehouse to the stores, sales teams sell the goods, people that install the goods, when a service call is required someone goes out ..... etc? You would deny the 1000's that work just for Harvey Norman a job?

OK people go on holidays over seas and spend there money. Dont Australians work at the airport, fly the planes, own the planes, work in travel agents, pay taxes to fly .... etc?

What about the trade deals that are done between companies and countries? The amount of product that leaves these shores do so because we allow some to come back!

Not much to ask ...... just a stupid thing to expect.

If things here were produced as good as for a simular price here, they could compete. They don't all the time and has nothing to do with just cheap labour ...........

I just did a quick search and could find no threads on blatant advertising directly targeted at $900 recipients.

Maybe you can show me the ones that have done that to death.

Why wouldn't you target your advertising? People think they're getting 'free' money, so are more willing to blow it on crap they might not otherwise buy. I don't agree with the package at all, since my taxes will be paying for it for the next however many years, but regardless of that the point of it is to stimulate the economy, which only happens if people spend the money.

People are receiving $900, for god's sake get over it.......

As I said before, if FordForums.com.au was running the country there would never be a financial crisis, everything would be perfect, correct?

There's a bunch of stuff like this on the net. My sister showed me a 37' LCD TV that is $900 and it comes with a FREE 'Kevin 37' T-Shirt.

If your interested - http://www.techworld.com.au/article/...lcd_television

Yeah the $900 bonus has been talked about a fair bit and several threads locked.
Once you have it its your money. No one can force you to spend it to stimulate the economy like its supposed to be spent.

But hey I've just probably repeated what someone else has already said 10 times.

Wonder how long before Holdens marketing department takes advantage of this
"With just two Ruddiculous payments you can drive away with a new VE Commodore"

Edit before people get up set this is not a dig at holden either - I think there marketing department is throwing everything they can at us to get us to buy their product.

True, but if we deleted every thread that was hijacked by those with agenda then GT, T3, F6 and turbo would have to be banned outright.

I don't see the point in spending my money at the moment when the economy is going down the gurgler anyway.

I'll just buy shares.

Thats great news, and the exact reason this is being done.

Granted the system is very flawed. People living overseas for years but have investments here will get it, people who died will get it etc.

One thing that has gone under the radar, both at my work, and with many of my friends:

You only get the $900 if you had to PAY TAX over and above what you do already. If you got a refund 07-08 you will not get a cent. If, after all has been assessed you get a tax bill for 1c or more (ie you need to PAY extra after your numbers have been crunched), you get the $900.

Sorry if that now changes things for some people.

I was listening to the radio this arvo and they had an 'expert' going through the clauses of the deal.

This site seems to confirm it as well:

It appears to be that way. Normally I wouldn't care for such money, but being unemployed at the moment it would definitely be welcomed.

the great depression was partially caused by protectionism. It doesn't matter where you spend your money - as long as you spend it. If it goes to china because you bought a new toy then china will in turn buy raw materials from Australia. and so the wheel turns....
see what caused the great depression

Either way Australian businesses are still going to get money from it and some of it will still make it back to the government in taxes.
