Spray a car, all with aerosol cans ?

You spray a panel, then sand it back, spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand,spray, sand, spray, sand. When you've finally got a reasonable finish, move on to the next panel.

I have had very good results with a low pressure gun (little beaver CIG) and lacquer.
What car you thinking of doing?

Ive seen a yellow VC Commy slowly morph into a pretty tidy Midnight Blue. Was pretty god outcome for a rattle can job on a car being used to deliver Pizza every day.

But yeah, 1 panel at a time I recall lol

I have a compressor and gun, i have a small elec hand held jobbie too, not that i've ever tried to paint , haha, the reason i wanted to try cans is that i could remove and do one panel at a time, on stands, it will take me days to do each one, then i could undercoat then paint them as i go, and i wouldn't have to keep cleaning the gun and wasting paint. for a panel at a time, i really only need to do a same colour, closed door spray, Just for the RWC and Rego.

My late Uncle & a Mate wore out 5 of these Painting a Pre-War Chev back in the Late '50s..

Have actually painted a car in Enamel with brushes. Once sanded, which took ages due to all the brush marks, didn't come out too bad. It was white and would pass any 10 foot test with ease.

Had my house painter neighbour paint the old Ford Transit motorhome in enamel by brush. It looked good even up close.

Yes.
If you use acrylic and just plaster it on, any dryness or peel will sand out easily and buff back to a shine. Similar to the brush jobs done many times.
However, you will use so many cans, and it will be such a long, tedious job, youll wish you didn't. Also will be very expensive if you get cans mixed to your colour.
Get yourself a cheap $30~ pot gun for primer only, dont have to clean it that well. Repair all your bolt on panels, then shell out for the $90 gravity fed and paint the whole car in one hit.

No.

Problem with spray cans is the limited pressure that comes out of them. You need really short strokes with a spray can because the pressure isn't steady.

If you have a tub of hot water, 10 spray cans in it, shake-spray, switch can, shake-spray etc it can be put on fairly even, but you'll have to sand it so much you could have saved money and just brushed paint on anyway.
You'd have spent so much you could have bought a second hand compressor and gun and actually had more control of the air pressure and needed to sand less.

Back in 1992 I knew guys doing spray can jobs on a xy panel van and xb sedan. Definitely de-valued it but still probably worth more than what the spray cans cost

But yeah, that was the first time I've seen whole cars done with spray cans, so that's why I know they never come out good.

Thanks for most of the replies, I am not a teenager, wanting to do a show paint job with $10 spray cans. the reason I asked is because the car isn't up to having a professional paint job, as the next owner will likely strip and resto. I have compressor and guns, and money isn't an issue. but having lung fibrosis and cancer, I can only work for 10 mins before I need a half hr break to breathe. So I would be forever cleaning guns and jets. The only limitation I have is time, i had a thread where i was restoring her, but got sick and it's been sitting for yrs now. So i just want to get it on the road and drive her for a while. i have finished the interior. so i'm not worried about it looking flash, just good enough to be registered, because i want to have some fun in her, while i still can. and as for devaluing the car, rubbish, whatever it is painted with will need to be stripped eventually.

Yeah, agree, who cares what it looks like from 50ft away. Get her done and drive it to enjoy. All the best to you.

My very first car I painted with aerosol paint cans, came up looking real good for an old car in those days, just don't expect what a proper professional respray job will give you.
Just make sure your prep work is done properly.

It's just really hard to get a constant pressure from cans.
Right now I'm doing a bumper and trim touch up and for the gloss black I just used supercheap paint and it was terrrible. The stream kept cutting in and out going from dry to runs. I had to spray a 2 inch wide strip back and forth horizontally in 50 strokes to get a wet cover but with no dry and no runs.

I'm touching up the colour with a proper colour matched can from the paint shop and it has better pressure, but you get what you pay for because that small can cost $37!

So you'd be paying a lot - a hell of a lot, for high quality paint in high quality spray cans, or suffering with the terrible output of cheap cans.

I already regret being too lazy to get my gun out, but my compressor is very very tired and I've broken the separator/drier when ripping it down and moving house and losing my workshop.
I'd rather buy 10 litres of thinners and put it in a bucket to throw the gun in and chuck a lid on between the times you can do the job with a gun if you already have the gun and a good comp, reg and filters.

It's much easier to have a control with a gun and set it so paint flows evenly. Less sanding work which would be of benefit to you.

You might Be better Off Finding a Young Apprentice Or a retired Spray Painter Who are keen for a bit of extra Drinking Silver.........
