E85 - Where to get it

These's been a lot of talk about E85 of late, lots of performance builds tuning for it, now there's even new regs for its use at Drag racing events, so - where can you get it?

I'm doing this up for my Sat Nav (GPS), so I also have all the co-ordinates.
If anyone else is interested in getting the POI file, just pm me with what unit you have and your email addy and i can send you a copy.

In the meantime, all feedback would be appreciated, especially with anything that may be missing, or incorrect.

ps. the racing fuel appears to only be available in 20lt & 200lt drums - cost around $1.50lt.

I don't think many people will go for e85 until it's available almost everywhere.

According to that list there is 1 servo in Newcastle with e85. I sure as hell wouldn't want to fill up at Hamilton all the time since I head to that area once a month.

E85 at most pumps is mixed with 91 ron, Caltex are only guaranteeing less than 85%.
E85 used for racing most use the one mixed with 98 octane, I use the same one used in the v8 super cars has a corrosive inhibitor in it, trade price $2.50 a litre sold in 200 litre drums..
Cat600 (Dan) is right on top of this stuff and has great knowledge of the product..

Pump fuels:
Caltex E-flex is between 70 and 85% Ethanol, no guarentees how much on what date... it is only mixed with 91 ULP
United is mixed with 91 also but its always 85% Ethanol or slightly higher.

Drum Fuels: (all 85% Ethanol except where mentioned below):
Elf is mixed with their 109 ulp I believe but costs the most.
Powerplus is mixed with their 109 which I understand to be made with Ethanol in it which actually makes it like an E90+
CSR is mixed with 98 ulp but I tell you it makes as much power as the two above. It is also the cheapest of the three drum fuels above

There is another 85%+98ULP drum mix alternative that is happening but I am not at liberty to mention it at the moment.... I will get confirmation on that and update the thread tomorrow.

Lastly, you can buy E100 (Technically E98 as it has 1% ulp and some corrosion inhibitor in it) in 205L from Manildra.... I used to do this a few years ago. You can mix this with whatever you want, however you want (EG, 50/50 with MaxNos/C16 for a good dyno fuel brew or run it with 15% Martini/Sunoco 109 for proven race fuel octane boost vs a 98 mix..... sounds like a funny way of doing it but when you look at $10 per litre for C16 (that's in bulk 205L pricing mind you), mixing it with $1.40/L E100 in a drum makes a 50/50 fuel cost of $5.70 per litre and you have a fuel that will support 30psi of boost still.

My XR6 Turbo runs 20ltr of E85 and loves it!

I use United becuase it is allways E85 "United is mixed with 91 also but its always 85% Ethanol or slightly higher"

If Caltex was the same then i would use that becuase it only 5 min drive away insted of United which is 30min away.

also Envy Imports sells the Platinum Race Products in the drum. they have E85, E90 roughly $2.50/L for 200L.

if you're worried about the cheap stuff from the bowser not handling boost, we run the United pump E85 in our Corolla, makes 700+rwkw, 35-36psi with a 3L. we will be putting it on the Platinum in a few weeks to see the difference.

or you can just buy them in 200L barrels for $500

Can somebody please start a thread about what is needed/required to run our TUNED vehicles on this brew please ?

What filter's are required / where to purchase them / part numbers and any supporting componentry that is also required..

Fuel pump part No's , any special dia hoses or injectors needed etc etc ...

So far i have read a lot of advice but i havn't seen any actual fit outs showing what parts need to be changed , how much the conversion on average will $cost$ or how the longevity of these new parts will survive the corrosiveness of this awesome fuel.. thoughts / pics anyone / Daniel ??

If i need glasses can someone please direct me to a thread on here or anywhere, that has already answered my questions for me thank you..

I am sure many of us are ready or contemplating to make the switch but information is vary scarce at this point...

I was looking at the Elf pricing for the E85 at work, I thought it was supposed to be a CHEAPER alternative??

i think the corrosiveness of E85 was started by the oil companies

if ur fuel lines are made within the last 20 years u will be fine. car manufacturers tend to prepare for the future.

u need 30-33% more E85 than standard fuel. Bosch 044 pumps are awesome and good for around 370kw at the engine on E85. injectors depends on how much power u want.

United is $1/L and Caltex goes around $1.10/L

Corrosiveness is way overrated.... even Methanol is not that bad, its the water that has the potential to be absorbed by the alcohol that actually does 95% of the potential damage.

My AU has had E85 in it for years, often sitting in the tank for months at a time (with broken diff/gearboxes) I pulled the 100 micron suction screens the other day for the first time and they were almost perfectly clean... no buildup of scale or anything just what you would expect after all that time.

Having said that if you are going to be alternating between ULP and Alcohol with long periods of use between changes then the E85 will free up the "gum" or "varnish" that ULP builds up in fuel systems... this will clog filters quicker

Daz either of my builds show what is required in the way of pumps/filters/hose/regulators/injectors.

Pumps = Anything that says its alcohol compatible but 044's are great and the best choice IMO... bank on 650 engine hp per pump on ULP or 70% of that on E85

Filters = Stainless mesh... dont attempt to use paper/cellulose they block up. Thing Aeromotive 40 and 100 microns in your system

Lines = Teflon Braid is the best as its compatible with everything. I have used Aeroquip AQP socketless in my AU the whole time and its been fine... no perishing at all.

Regulators = the factory ones seem ok but considering the higher flow requirements you can go for the Turbosmart/Aeromotive style ones.

Injectors = The factory ones are not giveing grief yet to my knowledge (and they are easy to get redrilled so they are cheap anyway). In the higher flow stuff ID1000/ID2000 are proven alcohol performers.

Yep everything I have read on the United E85 says its pretty damn good. The 91 octane factor pales in comparison to the higher ethanol % qualities.

few people i saw tend to shy away from it with boost. first hit of it we did was on 32psi. we did find however that we had to take timing out (4 degrees) but those going from ULP/PULP etc won't have that drama we went from C16 which can handle alot of boost and timing.

on the Capri going from PULP to Platinum E85 we could add 5 degrees more.

would be good to see if we can add that back when it goes on the Platinum E85 and the power difference it makes.

Thanx also to Cat600 and Spoolman for the info, been following your builds Dan for a long, long time - though it does tend to turn me a little green, I love what you are doing and how you are doing it (though I still hope hat you wont succumb to that RED gearbox)...

Of course your' not alone - seems more and more are going down that path also.

Ben73, that's kinda the point of my thread I guess, just to let you know what options might be available. It's definitely a growing movement, a year ago it was virtually non-existent as a pump option at least. Look how quick E10 took off, Once cars are made to accept the fuel, it will grow very quickly I reckon.

I see I have also missed putting on the Sucrogen outlets, and there is a WA race fuels distributor that I will add also. Will update when I can.

DAZZLER351 conversion kits are available for street cars right now, see here http://www.flexfuelkits.com.au/ and here http://e-85.com.au/1052/1052/ for instance.
For performance builds, I expect it will be determined by what KW you are chasing, but perhaps a thread by someone who knows might be the go...

Airmon Elf is imported fuel, think you would expect to pay more? also it's a race blend, so also more expensive. Pump ethanol hopefully would be different.

and buy a can of Start Ya Bastard when u make the change to E85, on colder days u will find it harder to start. we just spray a little bit (1-2 sec spray) in thru the turbo or intake manifold.

Am i right in assuming then that these factory injectors are up to the task if i add the Bosche 044 pump and a metal screen washable filter ??

Turbo fuel reg added to my N/A rail will be beneficial as well yes ?

Mine has over 250kw at the fly now on 98* it doesnt lean out at all even at 6500rpm on the dyno...

I better hurry up and do this so i can get pics up and prove it is do-able and the costs involved...

Daz, u won't find too much of an increase. you'd looking at maybe 10-15kw. E85 is much better for the boosted applications.

Mine BA Turbo gained 30rwks from adding 20ltr of E85 and with 2 psi less

methanol does smell MUCH better than E85, shame it can't be used on the street.

try the VP M5, the Nitroparaffins bring out the flavour and the HP

Have split the Race fuel off the main list, quite a few added.
Have also changed the Caltex fuel to E-Flex as it's not guaranteed to be 85% Ethanol, the others are.

I know there's performance benefits from ethanol fuels in appropriate engines, and that's a good thing for the future.

Now if only they could produce it from a source that meant we weren't turning good food producing land over to making it, and if masses of people in many countries now face food shortages because their governments are growing corn for fuel instead of food for thier people...I might get excited...

OK I will bring this one back to life. I am having an all aluminium engine being built and intend to run it on E85. Who around the Sydney/Illawarra area can dyno tune a tunnelrammed 9 litre on E85?

I understand engine size doesnt matter, more the E85 experienced tuners with a tunnelrammed NA motor. I am running 13:1 comp and need a good tune as I have a lot of an investment in this engine and want to get it right the first time.
P.S. I mean "Engine Dyno"

not sure of any around the Illawarra area. Vince Rigoli is good but doesn't have an engine dyno, might be able to hire out one and get him there.

another guy is Mario Teuma he used to own and run Pro Modifications in Kings Park, he builds, tunes engines and some fab work from home (his shed is bigger than most people's workshops

, he has a top of the line engine dyno there)

In the near future I am moving away from the drum Cheetah e85 and going to try move to United e85 as it is now available in most area's i take my BA. Depending on the difference, I may stay permanently with the united 85 as I have heard good results. No chance the car will see e-flex crap from united with its un-reliable readings.

I will do a small write up and comparison charts and dyno sheets once I make the change and post it on a thread. Should hopefully show people how much difference there is between the 2 and encourage more people to make the change to e85 united. The more we use it, the more they will spread it out to their stations.
