Default Ford XY dampers

Shockworks is proud and quiet excited to have our first Ford XY dampers finished and ready for test and development. These guy's are adjustable monotube dampers front and rear. The rear dampers are inverted with the adjuster at the bottom mount for easy damping force changes. We should have these available for sale in Spring. We will continue to support the Ford models old and new with an AU kit on the way in the future.

I forgot to mention we are also working on an CNC machined alloy top mount with a spherical bearing to reduce the sideload on the low XY Falcons.

Awesome stuff!
What are the total extended and compressed lengths of the shock absorbers?

I only ask, as one of the big issues when lowering these in the front, is running out of physical shock travel.

Hey Sparky,
The open length of the damper is 327mm and 225mm for the compressed length for the front. The rear is 396mm open and 245mm closed. We are also making an alloy CNC machined top mount with spherical bearing that will help with the travel issue and the sideload the damper see's with the low cars!!

Cheers
Brett

Ah, ok, I did a comparison a while back, when trying to find the shortest x-series front shock. (see pic)

Found the Koni's to be the shortest compressed, at 210mm overall, incl the shortest body overall.
(Apparently the chinese Ultima's are identical lengths to the Koni's.

The Sportsryders, were the longest, at 230mm, and by far the hardest to compress.

At 225mm, a shock top spacer would still be needed IMO, (or a top mount with up to 20mm extra height - max, before bonnet clearance becomes an issue) when running 2inch lowered or more.

I found that after approx 3-4 inches lowered, the upper ball joint approaches it's angle limits.
(after shortening the bump stop)

There is still movement, but IMO, not enough for acceptable wheel travel, unless the balljoint is wedge shimmed - as the Yanks do on the mustangs, when fitting a Shelby drop on the UCA.

Thanks very much Sparky for the heads up about the lengths. Still have a bit to learn about the old girls and will be in our test XY at Calder on the weekend to see how the first damping forces go in the car. All the dampers in the picture seem to be twin tube which is OK but the Shockworks are adjustable monotubes. We can reduce the closed length but just shortens the rod travel and thought this was a good compromise to start with. The new alloy top mount will sit the top mount a bit higher and with the bearing won't have the compliance of the rubber bush so may be able to go a little higher with the mount, but will see first.
Cheers
Brett

Sounds like a heap of fun, wish I could tag along!

I only live local in Croydon.
I'm a self employed sparky by trade - 240/415V Domestic/Commercial/Industrial/Solar,
and have a small factory in Croydon also, for excess stock storage, etc -
but have a couple of 4 posters in there, a wheel alignment machine and other goodies, for my after hrs R+D work. :P

Been playing with the x-series falcons for yrs.
Anything I can help with, let me know!

Hi FPV8U,
The driver, James is really happy with the car and was awesome to be in the car for a few laps. He is a really good steerer and I was very surprised at his skill as I am not the best passenger especially going side ways We where going down the back straight in forth gear at about 140Kph fish tailing all the way.
It's good to feel the car as we still need to improve the overall package but a great first test.
Cheers

old thread but do you still have something available for the XY? I'm rebuilding my low and very slow Fairmont; been super happy with my FG's coilovers and would be more than happy to use Shockworks dampers as opposed to the Koni's which was where I was heading.
