I turned down a pair of XM Falcons for free many years back. I went with my brother in law to a guys farm where he had heaps of old cars...him to buy a 1937 Ford ute, me to pick up a 1938 DeSoto...and the old guy had a pair of XM sedans sitting in front of the DeSoto. They were both white, dirty, but pretty much rust free and with red interiors (one with torn seats but the other intact). They both had engines with little chrome metal plates spot welded to the side saying "Factory remanufactured engine", and gave oversize sizes for bearings and bore. I pried off the plates and kept them (I'll scan one in if anyone is interested).
The guy told us they were going to the dump, and we could have them if we wanted them. I was dazzled by the big old DeSoto, and said no...

5.4 V8 Falcon XT seems quite rare.......and I could do with mine increasing in value, but doubt it will last a couple more decades with my hellish commute on the Melbourne western ring road LOL!!

The problem that Ford has now (and I'll say now that I'm a big six cylinder fan) is that they've forgotten that the V8 models like the GT is supposed to be "the ultimate", in power and performance.

For many years now they haven't been. The turbo six has been the weapon of choice, unless you purely want to listen to an exhaust note. The 310kw turbo six is amazing, but I look at a big poster on my son-in-laws wall with "The mother of all performance cars", the 260kw GT.

Come on Ford...if you were serious the "normal" GT would wipe the floor with any six cylinder you build.
Unfortunately the demon of technology has caught up with the old V8's...and did some time ago.

They'll be worth money in the future, but a bit of thier gloss has been lost by Ford forgetting that the V8 performance optioned cars should be the star model at the top of the heap, instead of a very exclusive luxury performance car which is, to be blunt, a little soft...

I think you forget GT is and always stands for Grand Tourer.If you want the ultimate performance ford it was in HO spec which unfortanately is not an option in todays market.I think that every GT build for the public fits this criteria very well.

I'd say that the 'regular' (non-XR/FPV) V8s (XT V8, Fairmont V8 etc.) would become the next classics, due to sheer lack of availability.

Agreed. While it was a mistake to discontinue the V8s, Ford should not have brought them back, and instead should have turbocharged the inline six back in the EB days. The Ford turbo sixes would have obliterated the Holden V8s of the time, but the Ford V8 of the time ended up having barely any performance difference from the Tickford I6.

Edit: As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan of the venerable "4.0i OHC"

Correct me if im wrong but i dont really think if theres gonna be anymore classics because the times have changed.
Everything these days are throw away including cars, the plastic clips and fancy stickers and cheap plastic internals just dont last.
Even the paint jobs on all newish cars that are blue or green tend to peel within a couple of years, i remember the old valiants paint was neer impossible to sand back.
the only thing that makes new cars distinguishable from each other is the crappy plastic bits and there gay names.
Were have the good names gone such as Dodge Chalenger, Cobra, Bronco, Interceptor.

+1 My mate just bought a LSI VT SS and over here in NZ good condition 5.0 SS VTs seem to have higher asking prices than the LS1s (doesn't mean they are selling for that though).

Aussie cars of the last 10 years, I can see optioned up Berlina and Calais 5.7 and any LS1/2 6 spd.
Any Tickford AU especially a V8 Fairmont Ghia with factory options.
BA/F hmmm not too sure probably would have fallen to bits by the time they are old enough for classic status.

I'm not trying to bag out classics because I love and appreciate classics. But I very much disagree. Old cars are far inferior to modern ones in just about every aspect, except exterior styling (and a lot of old cars are just as ugly, if not uglier than modern ones).

They're terribly unsafe in an accident, and you're more likely to have one initially because they handle badly and the brakes are crap. So the "crappy plastic" serves it's purpose when it absorbs the impact of an accident.

Buy a used car 10-15 years ago and the first thing you'd have to check for would be rust - don't forget the rings! You just don't see rusty cars blowing blue smoke in car yards anymore because we've advanced on from that.
Old cars rust like there's no tomorrow. After 13 years my EL Falcon does not have a spot of rust.

Also don't miss the sluggish carbs that need to be warmed up for 5 minutes in winter and the terrible fuel economy they bring.

Old-style flat paint is just as bad as modern car paint. The difference is that the clear flakes off new paint whereas old flat paint blushes and fades like mad.

Sure the old Valiant/Kingy/Falcon might have been a good car in their day, but their day is well and truly over.

I'm not trying to be negative but from an objective point of view, when it comes to safety, overall performance and expense (restoring a car costs big $$ I assume, paint, rare parts, body work, new powertrains etc), classics just don't compare. I understand the benefits, like ease of maintenance, the nostalgia, the styling etc., the attention and satisfaction that owning a classic brings but to say that modern cars are "plastic fantastic" pieces of garbage isn't true.

okay, better scrap my EH and XP and go buy a Prius. I also understand the benefits of later model cars, but rather than accept the missus' suggestion to ugrade to her EF Fairmont as a daily driver when she got her XR6T, I decided just to pass it on to the inlaws and happily continue along with the EH wagon. Yes it takes a few minutes to warm up each morning, gets below average economy, non-existent safety features, no heating or aircon..... I'm not naive about the whole thing, but the experience of owning and using a classic as a daily is just something else. One day I might retire her to weekend only use and use something more modern with creature comforts, maybe even stretch 20 years newer..... after all, my WB Statesman is getting closer to the road now. Long story short I cannot find myself settling for something modern and anonymous, will stick to carburettors and chrome bumpers as long as possible. The wife's XR6T is brilliant and I'd class it as a future classic, and whilst it's fun to drive, it just doesn't tick the boxes in the same way

Exactly.
We have had "modern" cars for maybe the last 15 years now, but always also had a second car. That second car has deliberately been chosen as something old and interesting.
For instance, our new G6E is our main car, but we also own a 1982 Toyota Celica. I set myself a budget of $7000 when looking for a second car, and made a few requirements: two doors, air con, five speed, four cylinder, something interesting. Being unable to find a two liter escort to fill the space, and not really liking the complexity of an old RX7 (as much as I love them, not a car to own out in the bush with sometimes questionable mechanic shops...), I chanced upon the Celica and bought it.

I could have just bought one of the hundreds of Hyundai Excels or Kia's that infest every second hand yard in the country, but I deliberately chose an old car. I can service it myself on the rare occasion something does go a bit rough, the parts are cheap and easily available, and it gets more looks than the hundreds of SS Commodores and FPV's that every second guy with a lease vehicle seems to have.

My sister-in-law, who is an intensive care nurse, is horrified by it...it isn't festooned with air bags (six is her minimum for a car she will buy), doesn't have anti-lock brakes or stability control, and is old.

Not sure what she has to say about her husbands 1937 Ford ute he is restoring in the shed behind thier house...

Looks better than a nice little Hyundai, don't it? And I wager worth quite a bit more...

I think classics of the past became classics because of tougher laws, making the classics more powerful than their successors. Unless that happens again, we are not going to see "classics" again. Manufacturers seem to be keeping up with the constant changes of emissions, without sacrificing power now. Cars still seem to be getting more power all the time. They are making their predecessors forgotten. If V8s finally become extinct, or if we ever see another 1971, then they will definitely go up in value.
