Souh of Cairns is Innisfail. Innisfail is pretty much going to be smack bang in the centre of the storm. Cairns should fair slightly better. I would be heading inland - as the cyclone travels across land, it lessens in force; reports have it (predicted) down to a Cat3 by the time it hits Georgetown which is just inland from innisfail. There'll still be lots of wind and rain, but less destructive than when it first hits the coast.

Well said Prof, very timely advice.

Without risking the tag of "doomsday advice", I would like to offer some advice to all residents of QLD, NT and perhaps other states.

Please keep an eye on BOM and other local authorities for future warnings, even those not in the warning area right now may be in a day or two. Please keep in mind that the BOM predictions are just that, predictions and this thing is unpredictable and can track anywhere. As an example, look at what cyclone Vance did in WA. Vance was also a cat 5 storm when it hit Exmouth and tracked through the guts of WA when it left landmass at the Bight, still a cat 1 storm.

Please, play it safe and come up with a plan on what you have to pack away, tape up or lash down should it turn your way. Most of all, watch for warnings and follow the official advice.

To those about to do battle with Yasi, good luck, my thoughts are with you and I hope to hear from you all in a few days (or whenever communication systems are up and running again). Stay safe and be strong.

Yeah, but aren't all the roads and any form of transportation closed off now? I thought everything was shut at 10am this morning.

I would find somewhere / someone to bunker down and don't go outside as it would be too risky.

I,d be going way south of innisfail and would have plenty of time, whether it be on the train or in the car. It wont be here for at least another 10 hours.

The time for running is now over. Serious rain will shortly flood roads that frequently flood during much lesser storms. Not good if you are caught in the middle of nowhere, with only your car for shelter if Yasi changes path.

Thanks for all your thoughts. I (& family) live 50km south of Innisfail, near Mission Beach and I tell you, you cannot help but feel nervous & anxious. If you can all think of your biggest fear like when you're public speaking, well this is ten times worse. Its very emotional & hasn't even hit yet. The Boss is under cover and the house is <10 years old but you can;t help but think the whole thing could go. We survived Larry and are well prepared so will share some stories over the next few days. Steve

Are you serious? Even the BOM is speculating on where and when it will hit land, and what airspeed it will have etc. I don't think anything said in this thread could add to the fear residents already have.

The BOM for the best part are a team of highly trained meteorologists, are any people here?

and you don't see anything that strikes fear? Read harder:

I don't see any references on BOM to the end of the world.

It's not up for debate, i'm telling people to keep to what's been reported from reputable outlets, and well wishes, it's not hard to understand.

you are clearly not here at the moment mate, dont tell us how it is up here when there are already 120km/h winds and its not even here yet. powers out in a few places as well. and trains finished up yesterday morning. anyone who is out in this right now is bloody stupid. i am genuinely a little worried about this, and i dont get worried easily

Townsville. It's started to get quite windy gusting up to 90kph according to my gauge, rain is getting very heavy. I forgot to seal off my whirlygigs and they are howling, I will loose them before the night is over. I usually get a view of the mountains from my place (Rangewood)I can't see a thing past about .5 to 1 klick. It's going to get hairy later on..

Wind is really picking up now....

For those that dont know and are in the cyclone area, try and keep your windows on the opposite side of the house to where the wind is hitting open a little.
This will help in stopping windows blowing out.
I wouldnt cover your whirly bird.... as it help keep the roof vented.
If it blows off, it blows off.
I am leaving the garage rollar doors open a little as well, they tend to blow of their rails, and then flap around to death.

Good luck to everyone!

Firstly, I am not braindead so I'll thank you to keep your personal insults to yourself.
Secondly, you have no idea. How many trains do you think run in/out of Cairns each day and where does the train line run and how long does it take to get down to Townsville?
Thirdly, I made it thru Cyclone Tracey so I speak with some experience.
Lastly, more than a few others don't agree with your sentiments as evidenced by their posts
