Nope, that's the reduction in heat you feel, not a reduction in UV light because untinted windows block 99% of UV light anyway! Tinted windows push that up to 99.9%!

Guess that's why you legally can't have less than 35% light transmittance!

Very true. If you have an accident and they see you have an illegal tint, they'll just say bad luck! They'll find anything to prevent a payout!
However, I have spoken to an XR6T owner with a 20% tint who collected a Kangaroo and had it repaired through insurance...may have been lucky though!

You can probably answer my question then!
I had a Ming tint done and it was like a pro had done one side and a noob did the other because the cutting was rough, and there were large vertical gaps on the windows! Had it redone, but how do I know if they used the metallic tint, and not the dye-based tint? Actually, how do you know they haven't totally stiffed you and just given you dye-based all around? Is there a simple test, like measuring temperature at the inside surface of the tint?

I think something else that is very important to add is the make of your tint, how much and where you had it done!

35% Ming, Bendigo, $400 on a BA wagon.
Legally, you can't even get a darker tint for the rear windows of a wagon! That sucks!

mmm... I don't think it's worth the $40,000+ gamble.

Are you sure, because I checked into this and the only ones who can have darker tints on rearmost windows are thsoe with work related vehicles. So if I was a travelling company rep and had stuff in the back, then I could have darker tint so no-one can see your goodies in the back...go figure!

Tinting is always a priority when i buy a new car, never had a car without it and never will. Legal tint sux, just not dark enough. Always had dark film and never questioned by the boys in blue.

bscampbell: I would have thought the wagon windows could be tinted 100%- after all, I see vans going around with no rear windows at all. Might be worth looking into, but keep in mind the rear window can't be too dark.

I'm pretty sure I have the darkest tint all-round on my wagon. I need to wind down the drivers-side window when reversing at night, but during the day it makes the car cooler and makes the passengers more comfortable, and during the night darkens headlights and arguably makes it more secure.

I have looked into it...try and get your insurance to pay up after an accident if they notice a darker tint! The vans are probably work-related vehicles, so you can on those, but for private vehicles you can't...I didn't want to take the chance!

Thanks for the info Rollin- that would make sense, but is it uniform country-wide?
I'd like some darker tint on my wagon-windows, but wouldn't darker tint on the B-C pillar windows impair your lane-change head-check?
Curtains might be a worthwhile alternative to rear-window tinting. When you have cargo, pull curtains across all windows when you're parked.

Most tinted cars I've seen have quality problems over time, I haven't seen a 5+yr old car without bubbles or scrapes/cuts.

I got 20% tint on the ute, it doesn't look so dark like 5% as to attract attention, but when trying to see who's inside from the outside is impossible, you can only just make out the silhouette throught the back window.

My XF has had tint for 11 years now (Formula 1 from Tint-a-Car), with no such issues!

my windows are 1 shade over legal...it makes the car look so much better....

i cant believe how many new performance cars i see done up, rims and lowering etc, with no tint...it ruins the look of the car imo.

I got a quote yesterday from premier tint $275 for darkest legal. Is this any good? Apparantly reduced from 350 odd. Tint-a-car was $350 for midnight express. Also anyone know a place in brisbane that'll give me a better deal?

My EF is tinted throughout. The rear window is peeling a bit at the top - so I'm going to take it in for a retint soon (just the rear window).

I bought this car second-hand and already tinted so I have no idea where they had it done. So far the only problem is with the rear window. It was a small peel until I ripped it down over the window. In a moment of insanity I thought I could peel it all off, but I only got a bit of the top layer AARRRRGHHHHH!!! Time to get the experts to fix my f*** up :(

Beware! You will regret cheap tinting after a few years when is starts bubbling and peeling. Spend a few extra bucks and you'll have a clear mind. Some places offer a lifetime garantee on their tinting - can't beat that!

Anyone out Cranbourne way I seriously wouldnt go past Darren at Enhance window tinting. (03) 5996 2272.
I'm not saying he is the cheapest but he is not the dearest.
I think a ute starts at $175 and a sedan at $270. Don't quote me on this I'm just tring to give you an idea.
Tell him Kev with all the XR's around the corner sent you. You might save a couple bucks.
I had a mate come from Montrose because he liked the quality of his work.

I found him about 3 years ago after my parents had an absolute shit house job done in Dandenong by one of the big names. There car went back 3 times and it still looks like shit when the windows go down. Looks like the tint was trimmed with a hacksaw blade.
