I think Ford Aus are going to have a lot of trouble with the XR5 - they cant price it too cheap as the Volvo equivalent from which it comes from retails for around $50k.

If it's into the $40K mark then you would be better off with an xr6 or xr6t.

Tx5 Ghia all over again. It will sell, but it wont sell like the WRX.

the 35k sticker price is pretty good i think..most people interested in the XR5 don't want an XR6T. Looking around a lot have people have already put the cold hard cash down for the focus.

I struggle to understand the point you're making about it undercutting the Volvo.

Ford and Volvo arent even compeditors! People looking at buying an XR5 would sure as hell not look at a volvo! I'm one of them. Just becasue they have the same engine doesn't mean that they have the same profit margin or sales quota's. They are a totally different car aimed at different markets, and at $35K with performance times close behind a stock XR8, the Focus XR5 will sell very well I beleive.

I can confirm the XRT5 is $35990 + on roads. Mine with leather recaros is $41100 (including on roads).

Total for the local cars is 7,722. Not bad when compared to last years figure of 8,394 (from memory). Feb 06 is down 8% on Feb 05 whereas Ford is planning to cut production by 13%.

The XR5 Turbo is FWD only, the S40 T5 is an AWD plus it has a good deal more kit than the XR5. Nicer build - you pay more, but you get more. It's more luxo sport than the XR5.

Different markets.

Why wouldn't they be competitors - both cars are european, Volvo isn't exactly a prestige brand, although it might pretend to be.

The s40 and the xr5 share the same engine, same chassis, same dimesions and if the xr5 was awd then it would just different body panels and interior, its nearly comparing a telstar to a 626, except now one costs another 20g more for awd.

I will admit however that the Volvo brand does have attract a loyal following of safety conscious people, I guess you could drill it down to saying "what sort of car do you associate with Volvo, what sort of car do you associate with focus, what sort of car will you associate with Mazda"

If you're comparing Ford & Volvo, you could look at VW and Audi - it is a similar scenario. There will be some crossover, but not a whole lot.

Very good month for Ford considering the poor showing in January 2006. The only concern is 93 LWB models were sold - very poor considering they have the ZF 6 speed as standard.

1,011 380s sold. Not even the $29,990 LE model was able to generate a boost in sales. This car deserves better then that.

what is more of a concern to me is the Focus vs Corolla. Ford really need to put the boot in the Focus marketing, the car is so much better than the Corolla, the only thing the Corolla has going for it is the perception of reliability.

Many more cars are now available rather than less buyers. Supply has been an issue from day 1. (as you would know!)

You realise that you can take the style side off and falconute and sell it and have any manner of tray back installed, dont you? Which means the limited edition was is not all that... special.

THere are heaps of XR tray back s around Brisbane, there is one particularly nice HgAg ute, Turbo, with APS gear and a polished flat bed frame with timber slats and 19" rims floating around., but its definately not 1tonne.

There is a new Courier coming soon, I've seen it and it's a good improvement over the current one. The front is quite bold, however the rest is pretty bland. Interior is an improvement and apparently the first ute in its segment to offer side curtain airbags.

Corolla has been always a big seller, last year there was one month where it out sold Falcon, (fuel prices)..
reliability is a big plus when buying a car as is the re-sale value for some..
the Corolla has shown its been a clear winner in most if not all facets wanted in a small car for many years...

True, and the focus is not a bad car, certainly has taken it to the corolla in many a reviews and beat it. Ford should somehow twist some words to really show how good the Focus is, it is already better looking than the corolla. now let people how good it is.

A significantly worse month than Jan 06. 2005 was Commodore's worst year since 1993. So far 2006 is already well down on 2005 figures. Alloytech? No thanks. The only winners for Holden are the Daewoo manufactured cars.

Holden claim that they mean a lot to Australia, however:

74% of Ford vehicles sold in Feb 06 are Australian made.
52% of Holden vehicles sold in Feb 06 sold are Australian made.

For February 2006 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 65,455 (86.9%)
Diesel - 8,817 (11.7%)
LPG - 977 (1.3%)
Hybrid - 111 (0.1%)

Total - 75,360 (2,086 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

For February 2005 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 69,744 (88.4%)
Diesel - 8,538 (10.8%)
LPG - 587 (0.7%)
Hybrid - 100 (0.1%)

Total - 78,969 (2,172 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

As can be seen, there is a slow movement away from petrol engines. The number of LPG powered vehicles has almost doubled. It will be interesting to see the LPG sales once Ford releases the E-gas engine on more BF models

While the rolla will probably always outsell the Focus. Ford still don't have the stock. The small amount that came across from NZ still isn't enough. A better indication will be shown later in the year when Ford finally gets enough Focus's for the Aussie market.
