i have a 200kw xr8, and i found whilst bp 98 is good, my economy strangely wasnt as good, and its the most expensive of the premiums.

i use the shell 98 ron.

cheers mate..
Well, i filled up the car with 98 from caltex yesterday before i dropped it off for the conversion..
Will see how she runs once the 8 is in!!

I run my TE50 (220kw) and my XR falcon (1966 the old type) both on Gull Premium (95) or Peak Premium (95).

BOTH cars noticeably lack power on BP's Ultimate (98). The XR feels gutless on BP 98 and the TE50 pings on BP 98 too.

I have no idea why and have tested this twice now (incase it was just a bad batch of fuel).

This seems to be against the grain of the thread, but just my experience. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I have used both 95 & 98 ron in my 220 Xr have not noticed any difference with 98 ron

I use Shell E10 in my P250 and the Beemer, both of which are specified to use 95RON fuels.
Shell E10 is 94RON, which is close enough for me, and neither car pings with it, so I'm obviously on the money.

I've used all of the 98 branded fuels and neither car showed any performance difference, except that both have a slightly worse range.
That's well offset by the approx 10c-20c/L cheaper price tag of E10, than any of the other fuels, even 91 ULP.
Plus shopping at coles gives us a further 4c off, and purchase a chocky bar or anything else for $2, you get 6c off.

The rule of thumb is to use the minimum RON needed to keep pinging away. Any more is wasted money, and potential performance loss.
98 is not usually needed in engines with a C/R of less than 10.5/1.

What is it?
No AU ever needed 98RON in standard(ish) trim.

The 5.0 Windsor is supposed to do 10 litres per 100 on the road, which is as good or even better than the I6.

Both my I6's are on LPG and I'd happily do the same to any V8 I bought, even a T-Series! (GK runs to quickly don the flame suit!)

I'd still enjoy the torque, but also the melodic sound from those lovely 8 cylinders, plus enjoy the fact that I get all that at a reasonable fuel cost.

In my mind, that's a win/win/win situation!

And you'll probably find those that do might have a problem.
As I said, my P250 runs on 94/95RON.

At the end of the day, it is what it is. I never whinge about fuel prices, so if I want to run my car on premium so it runs better, than that's my issue I guess.

I see what you're saying but you've still said that you would put it on LPG for economy havent you? Therefore, nobody who buys one without the intention of putting it on LPG does so for economy.

My 220 pings on 95 and its standard apart from exhaust, i can't hear it on the road but my tuner picked it up on the dyno.
Tuner also reckons that engines that he has pulled apart that run on 98 exclusively are far far cleaner in the combustion chamber than engines that run 95. the TS gets only 98, but for a daily driver i would struggle to justify 98 all the time.

It could be the exhaust that is causing it to ping on 95.
Any flow change might effect it enough to rattle.
I hear the 220's run a lot of timing, some say too much, and if it's borderline in standard trim, it won't take much to upset them.

That's a pile of crap IMO, all oil based petrol burns dirty.
E10 is actually better in this regard.

Try 95 in the TS, works for me, and rightly so.
I recall Ford even claiming they will run on 91 for a very long time, obviously with the pinging, performance loss and eventual self destruction.

Still disagree.

10 litres per 100 on the highway cycle is still the same or even less than the I6.

If you were doing almost all highway kays, say a trip like Melton to Ballarat, you'd be doing yourself a favour by getting the V8.

My comment was intended to counter the attitude that says "hang the fuel costs if you own an 8".

On my way to Appollo Bay today, I decided to do a little calculation on my XR8,
From the BP servo in K/Flat, Bendigo to the BP servo at the end of the new Ring Rd at Deakin Uni, Geelong a total of 195klm it used 18.5 Litres, which equates to 9.4L/100klm, Not bad considering the vehicle was fully loaded and sitting on 110 all the way, with some sprited overtaking as I can not believe the amount of rude driver's on our road's, espically around Geelong, I had three people pull out infront of me in seperate cases while I was doing 110, is it that hard to be patient and WAIT.......
Anyway so I am happy with the economy as I have had it into the 8's before.
Oh this was on BP Ultimate aswell as like I said that's all I use.

i do close to 700km a week and my 200kw v8 gets the shell 98 each top up..

so people here reckon it would run sweet on 95?

(only has exhaust/intake)

How many km's is everyone getting to a tank...(68L)..??
Obviously it depends on driving, but it'd be interesting to see the average..!

It will run, no worries, only way to find out is to try it, see how you go , if you notice any power loss or economy ?
But also remember the price diference between the two is marginal so if you want to run 98, then why not.
