I think the 2002/2003 timeline suits just fine....
Most can be traced to eBay and those Shannons auctions.

Clever marketing made it appear to be a great investment in buying classic muscle cars.

You couldn't give away an XA sedan in the 1990s.... now an orginal stock 6 cyclinder sedan has gotten to around $6000 on eBay.

Even the XC Falcon has slowly been gaining an appeal as it gets older....

Maybe when the GT Cobra was initially released, but now I would highly doubt it. It just the ones currently for sale on the net are all over $70k, and a lot of them have been for sale for quite some time now.

There are cheap muscle cars; do up an XC/XD its the same tech with the same money they go as fast as any australian muscle car. Or do you want something rare, historic and sexy, in great condition you don't have to put a spanner too; sorry lot's of people do as well and they have money and are willing to spend it on a non-depreciating asset. They just make too much sense, so don't wait around for a sharp drop in prices.

I thought i seen a program relating to prices in the us... The share market took a dive a few years back so these investers starting collecting "muscle cars" mopar,mustangs,camaros etc etc... so once one of the big players start investing all of a sudden everyone else wants in on it...bang... up goes the prices... but just like everything...it has its highs and lows...a GTHO Sold for close to a million in sydney ages ago...what would he get for it today?

Got offered an XA Sedan mid 2009, for basically ' name a price ' it was a workmate's father is law's car and it was just sitting around, he was thinking less than a few thousand.

If they were/are a half decent investor they aren't looking for the price it is worth today. That is the price they are prepared to pay today, they are two completely different things and require a time line to produce a result just like the hindsight 'investing' that provides so much to read about on here and elsewhere. I could've had, I should've bought, I could afford but didn't...

What will an XY GT HO Phase 3 be worth in 15 years time (insert your own time frame)?

Now here is my story about a car that could've, should've etc...

(I am a Holden fan from way back... haha last 3 cars have been fords though...)

I am only 32yo and yet I still remember quite clearly that I could've bought a HDT VK Director for well under 20k when I was 18yo, VL Turbo's and blue Meanie's were more expensive at the time. A mate at work has a VK Director. It was his first car. 2 owner car, he is the second owner. Bought it for 12.5k. 12 and half thousand dollars. It is an optioned T5 manual car, 90lt tank, electric sunroof and factory Group 3 kitted Director. He was offered late last year 100k for his car. 120k on the clock. Never rebuilt, never restored. Absolutely immaculate and I am mean showroom condition. This bloke is crazy with his cars. Cleans the inside of the wheels everytime the car is washed.

Edit: He also has every piece of paperwork, build sheet... everything that came with the car when first sold new.

The guy who offered the money says the offer still stands to this day. Car is not for sale though.

This car has appeciated by 10x in the time he has owned it.

What will this car be worth in 15 years time? Who knows but I wish I had bought one when I had the folding to do so... as I sure as hell know now that I can't afford it.

Things go through cycles.

I bought several M16 and AR15 rifles in the early 80s for between $350 and $550.
The last one I sold in 2002 for $10,000.
I bought an UZI for $2500, sold it 2 years later for $8,000.
But then I know of several people who invested in military rifles and lost heaps.
Right place, right time, right buyer......

I had a bright orange HG GTS Monaro I bought for $500 and was really happy when I sold it again for $500.

A friend of mine bought 3 blocks of land in Hervey Bay in 2002 for $60k each. I laughed at her as it was crap land in a not nice area.
She sold one in 2007 for $450k and one in 2008 for $570k, she still has the other one.

In today's Courier Mail is a story of a comic book selling for $1,000,000 USD

One of the problems for new players in the muscle car (in fact almost any) market is that so many have so much invested in keeping the prices up high that they will (and do) manipulate the market.

Ok, now I get it. I was actually posting about the fact they were advertising an XY GTHO Phase III for $52,000 odd. The photos clearly show right hand drive, thats what threw me.

Seems like a scam though, but they do have an address.

Moons ago, an uncle (by marriage) of mine moved to the States for a while, and in his absence got his brother to sell his matching numbers XY GTHO for him. The prices were on the rise and $30K+ would have been easy, but his brother sold it to his mate for $12K. My uncle was of course furious. To have the red beast today........

I just threw out an article from the Australasian Post magazine that was about cars to buy that would be worth a motza in years to come.... I'd dig it out, but it's in the very bottom of the recycling bin, and it's belting down, so you'll have to take my word for it! It was printed in 1989, I think. Hang on, I scanned it before I pegged it out! *rummage rummage* Found it!

Check it out.... They are already talking prices going nuts, but the prices are a bit more reasonable in the article than they are today.... for example:
"An FJ can fetch $6 000..."
"Ford GTs from the late 1960s and early '70's, even without total restoration fetch an easy $6 000 and and the rarer classics such as the Race GTHO, if restored, will go for ten times more their original cost"

Leyland P76... $8 000
Valiant Charger $10 000
Holden Monaro GTS $16 500
XWGT Super Roo $15 000 plus
Ford Falcon XM/XP Hardtop $8 500
Ford Falcon XYGT $30 000
Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 3 $60 000 (!!!!!)
etc etc

So, I reckon the prices started building in the early to mid 80's.

I'd go for the 2000-2002 period when the rate of price increase really took off. A number of factors I think - teenagers in the late 60's now at "that" stage of life, launch of AMC mag, return of the Falcon GT & Monaro, general economy was going great guns.

4Vman, I'm not sure the relative prices are quite the same there. Eg 22k in 1984 would be about double the value of a new Falcon. Mind you, there wasn't a GT Falcon then as there is now, which diminishes the attraction of the EL GT by comparison.
