Potato Cake:
Take 8 peeled potatoes and grate them finely. (*note: they will turn into mush)
Add salt, 2 eggs and 1 cup of plain flour to thicken. Stir. (more flour may be required, consistency needs to be that of thick gravy.)
Pour portion onto frying pan with small amount of oil and cook until golden, flip potato cake and cook until other side is golden. Repeat until all of mixture has been used.
Serve with much tomato sauce.

Potato Scallop:
Go to a Fish and Chips shop or local take away joint and buy one. Usually deep fried and not as tasty as a homemade potato cake.

And that boys, is the difference as seen through my rose tinted glasses.

The key difference is that a Potato Cake does not have a battered outsde as the batter is through it.
A Potato Scallop is mashed potato with a batter deep fried on the outside.

Count me 1 vote for potato CAKE. I live next door to a fish and chip shop and checking with the owner, who can be considered something of an expert in this instance, he said "It'a a potato cake. Queenslanders are silly, ugly and they smell funny".

See I know them as Potato Cakes (being victorian) & find it hard to come to terms with saying Potato Scallops. I've found lately that all potato cakes/scallops are really greasy & gross. The Fish & chip shop in Sunbury, they make great fish & chips (well they did when I was living down there years ago) heheheh.

Done.. they are now known as POTATO CAKES!

MASHED POTATO CAKE

2 c. sugar
1 c. sour cream
1 c. butter
1 c. mashed potatoes
1 1/2 c. black walnuts
1 1/2 c. raisins
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 c. flour
5 eggs, beaten separately
2 sq. unsweetened chocolate
2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix together all ingredients for 3 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

ICING:

1 box powdered sugar
1 stick butter
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Blend together and ice cake.

That is my point. Which means, these silly southerners are confused and starting an argument about nothing. Potato scallops and potato cakes are different.

If we aren't careful, this thread will just turn silly and get completely off topic. We need to band together as ford lovers and care for simmo in his time of need. Perhaps we can chip in together to the "Simmo needs potato scallops cooked by an aussie" fund. Thus providing greatly needed potato scallops to Simmo.

And why is it now that at more and more of the so called fish and chip shops
you can only get "small, medium or large" servings of chips. What ever happened to "minimum" chips, and ordering by the dollar eg: 3 bucks chips, 4 bucks chips.

And on potato CAKES, why is it that some places use those deli meat slicers to cut potatos so thin (like a slice of ham) for use in potato cakes. I want potato cakes, not batter cakes.

Potato Cake - has batter through it. Normally eaten in smelly, overcrowded southern states where from hundreds of inhabitants flee to beautiful sunny qld every day.

Potato Scallop - mashed potato with a batter deep fried on the outside. Normally eaten by larger predators.

Potato Gem - Mashed potato; deep fried.

Potato Fritter - Eaten by fritters.
