Club regos seem like a lot of hard work to me, joining a club, becoming a contributing member, dealing with the anoraks and wasting days at shows or cruises.
Or if I'm hard up I could spend a day doing some o/t at work, pay a full rego and drive my cars whenever I like.
Sometimes its harder work avoiding doing (or paying) for something

If all your in it for is to save a few bucks, your not the person for a club and that’s not who it’s aimed at

If you want to do car **** with mates it’s perfect

I’ve never ran out of logbook days

I had a 1980s F100 that was eligible for club rego that I felt the same way about, I didn't want the hassle of log books, car club memberships or further police scrutiny with the H plates.

On top of clubs and log books, annual renewals involve getting the club president or treasurer to sign your permit renewal then you have to present the completed renewal to vicroads and pay at vicroads, you can't pay for it on line as they have to stamp your permit renewal which is stuck in the log book.
If you work normal hours, can be harder than paying full rego

Plenty of people in NSW rorting historic rego with cars that should be on D plates. Every second modified car though knows a bloke who can inspect a car without seeing it, and if they don't one of their mates does. So the clubs are only being held to account by themselves.

The clubs have probably bought this on themselves with the people abandoning them in droves with their attitudes towards attending meetings and events - hence why these rorting ones have popped up.

i went to an informal meeting today ,(cars n coffee event) there were all kinds of ****box MG, holden , Austin ,Toyota , chev, fiat, leyland, citroen vehicles , and, one of my ford's on club permit scheme plates.
All passed roadworthy test , and all on vic club plates .
if you think the club scheme is just for cheap rego on an old ****box , your 1/2 right , if you think club permit rego is for cheap rego , i think youre approaching it wrong.

the first person i spoke to today as i was getting out of the car was a 10y.o(or so) kid , and he said "hello , can you tell me what year this car was made?" .
1976 , the year they made both XB and XC , i replied , he took it in , and i let him jump in , then had a yak to his ol man for 10 mins . the kid had a blast .
Without the club permit scheme this car , and others like it would languish in sheds , never to be seen again .

Yes they would, you'd just pay $800 for rego instead of sub $100.

Wish we had the log book system up here in qld, our club rego sucks you basically cant drive them without going on an official club run. Would love to have a couple free days a week to drive the old xdub

yep, pretty much open slather here, as long as the log book is completed. I sometimes give the old girl a run to the shops or to work. I buy 45 days and I reckon the most I have ever used would be maybe 28

As Trevor pointed out it should not be known as rego, its a club permit.
Thanks for clearing that up about the full RW inspections before being issued the club plates.

I haven't got a problem with the age / type of club registered vehicle just when you see them blatantly used for work purposes is wrong.

Its a pity Australia can not make a standard age or scheme to apply to all states.

If only the authority’s realised that if all regos were cheaper, then they would get more money from us in the long run. More registered cars does not mean more cars on the road, you can only drive 1 at a time.

There's plenty of old bangers on H plates around here - I'd rather look at them on my daily walk than the SUV fridges that seem to prevail.

I think that VicRoads (after consulting clubs) will alter the scheme more, tighten it down

The blow out in permits occurred when they removed the bit about only using the car on club runs

With the slowing down of American imports (due to asbestos and other issues) we will probably see less cars going on the scheme.

They may even extend out the time, say from 25 years to 35 year

People will always abuse a loop hole, and with little real policing going on there is a lot of opportunity to abuse the system.

They may even change to rules under which clubs get approved, there is a local club to me with 660 members @ $100 per year who run no events, have no meetings, all they do is provide access to the CPS, to me they are dodgy, but they are acting within the rules, VicRoads have even audited them with no faults found. $66,000 per year income for the clubs exec, not bad with no accountability

Club rego isn't a loophole though. It's a simple 25 year old law. I own 5 cars - four cars on club rego. 2 are good, solid weekenders and 2 are just cheap bangers that I keep rego'd just because I can. They're certainly not worth me paying $1600 a year in registration for to keep them on the road, but I can because of this and someone else can after me. It's my prerogative what I want to do with the car. It's not against the law to drive to the supermarket or to the tip and I don't use them for personal gain.

The only thing I'm exploiting is my right as a 13 year car club member to cheap registration without breaking any laws.

Here in N.S.W. Every Police HWP vehicle has Number Plate recogniton cameras (& an increasing number of general duties Vehicles Too.)
It'd be no real Biggies to "flag" conditional Number plates, & have a few more "random" Log book inspections. Could/Should/Would weed out the Abusers..

As the Victorian system is a 'permit' and I know that the cars details and 'permit' number are kept on a separate database within the main database, I doubt very much whether the number plate recognition cameras would have access to their details. Even if they did, what would it achieve? it would tell the officers that car has paid its permit fee, that the owner has no warrants - move on, next car!!!!!!!!!

However I will ask my mate, the HW policeman what he knows

In N.S.W. if you enter a Number Plate of an Historic vehicle into the RMS free Rego check website... https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/trans...e-registration

It will tell you(among other things) if the Vehicles is part of the 60 day personal use Log book trial or Not...

I would assume (But Don't know) that the Police would access to even more info than that... I do know for a fact they can tell if a Heavy Vehicle has any Uncleared Defects !!

take photos and report them

The HWP police did catch one in Ballarat a while ago using it as a daily, they checked his log book and it was in pencil, they had photos of him in the car on dates the book wasn't filled in - plates taken - CPS cancelled

I will but I'm not sure I need to play the Policeman.

I don't have a problem with owners having a alternative to full rego payments if they stick by the rule of said use.

Others on here should be concerned if its happening more now as they will only tightened the laws up around this issue and as usual everyone else pays the price.

my brother has a 929 on club rego but its a 13b rotary now and while it was on a trailer getting a new diff a cop pulled him over to say its not eligible for historic rego
he swapped the classic rego all good now

the cop pulled him over because it had mag wheels only

some clubs have a strange perception of the rules
i have seem a blown V8 VL on historic rego in NSW....um. yes orrificer its 100% original
i have also heard of a guy remove his sunroof in a HQ because the club said its not original

CPS is not a new scheme in Victoria, it has been around long before its current guise, it is just when they freed up the times you could use the vehicles (like non-club runs) is when the system started to get abused.

All these people who are doing the wrong thing wouldn't be able to under the old rules, they would have to be on a club sanctioned run to drive their vehicle on the CPS
