WTF does that mean?
If that's the case why are we referring to it as an essential service, why not just keep calling it a job?

I’m sort of put out by the Oz government basically pulling up stumps until 11th August but leaving the door open to make up things as they go - including constituting a quorum, cf:

After enacting indisputably Draconian measures the last thing I want is for them to grant themselves the right to bugger off and hide. I would much prefer they had agreed bindingly to convene much more regularly and own their decisions.

The pollies are bolting eh, I'm betting the medical profession won't be too far behind them.

I rang my heart specialist yesterday to cancel two appointments (myself & wife), they said they were in the middle of canceling all their appointments.

I have zero expectations of being able to get any medical help for the next 3-6 Months.

It means that every person currently working and paying tax is essential to the nation's economy at this time, he did explain that.

YOU are spreading the virus by refusing to stay home, not gloving up when you should or not following protocols put in place. WAKE UP, you idiots, you're condemning yourself and the rest of us to a worst case scenario with your ignorance and selfishness.

I'm asking why we are calling jobs essential services?
If non-essential services don't exist I don't understand the reason to confuse the public by referring to work as essential services.
I took over a dozen calls from staff yesterday trying to confirm if our industry is classed as essential services.

Go back and read previous posts in this thread to understand essential services - I have made it very clear!

Also, I've been managing complex things for over 30 years, involved in life/death and literally at the forefront of the shutdown of major facilities. I can see a cluster when I see one. Your experience is ???

Well your the man for the job, hop off the internet and get in contact with the government and save us all.

Please explain, with all your experience, how something like this was ever going to end any different in a democracy full of ego and years of political unrest?

You didn't respond to any of the notes on your comments about what is so out of control and wrong with the direction?

In your 30 years when have you had to deal with something of this scale? Your rhetorical question can wait, because I cant see anyone else here with pandemic experience?

So many experts that could do a better job

Being critical of government is a national pastime. It's all too easy to sit back and point fingers, as though you could do it better.

I think the govt is actually doing a good job with the situation. Thankfully they are being advised by actual qualified experts and not getting their info from forums and social media.

On that Day (15th) Australia had only 5 active cases of coronavirus.

Australia's (Govt) initial response was driven by the $$$ and now we're going to pay the price big time.

Does anyone really believe we only have a couple of Thousand cases at the moment?
Probably 10 times that and doubling every 3 Days.

Lockdown now for a better future on the other side of the Scomo Bridge.

The economic fallout would destroy substantially more lives than the virus. Even with the current measures the economic fallout will be huge. It will take years to get over.

I guess we'll never know prydey, I wonder what they would have done with 20/20 hindsight?

FWIW South Korea have done well according to their chart on the worldometers website (Active Cases).

while there are benefits to being able to look at the measures other countries take, they are still just a guide. you still have to tailor the measures to suit your own country.

there is no precedent for this.

I’d believe it. One of my “gay nomad” clients is Korean and his parents (of venerable age) remain well; everyone is apparently playing ball on risk mitigation. It seems a very socially conscious place, the stories of attention to healthy life and sustainability in even small towns and small ways is instructive.

I think the main feeling of hindsight would be locking down all borders with very, very strict measures for quarantine - not self isolation either - forcable lock downs and then wait it out - one of the small things that could have benefited Australia being so detached from the bulk of the world.

You left out rent. Add $200 (which is cheap btw) and you have a whopping $50 left!

So, do I buy that $4 chewing gum to have minty fresh breath, or do I keep it to save for that emergency car repair that will cost at least $300?

Ever noticed all those small loan adverts lately? Tempting isn't it? H

Having been on benefits for over 12 months because of a medical problem, same benefits as able bodied bludgers, who I might ad get everything given to them, I speak from experience that you can live on ($700/fortnight/$350/week), but need to make sacrifices.

No steak dinners, car/no car depending on personal savings, no luxuries like beer and a bbq snag in bread on the weekend, dental visits etc. Oh, and that credit card, good luck with that one!

lockdowns are not about stopping the virus. the virus can't be stopped. There are limited resources to cope with it so lockdowns just slow down the spread.

the earlier you lock things down, the longer you have to keep them locked down for. its just not that simple.

I pinched this off FB

SCOMO I may stand alone. But, I applaud you. I commend you. I respect you.

& I hope that even if you see one positive post - it will give you the confidence & motivation to keep going. 🍂
You just stood in front of the Nation, visibly tired & exhausted. You are trying your best, there is no handbook & yet you are expected to have all the answers. In some cases, you're only the messenger.

Everyone is talking as if you're the one to blame for this, that you created this, that you aren't doing enough or that you're doing too much.

People demanding a full lockdown yet rage & blame you for shutting down businesses & manoeuvring towards a lockdown.

People forcing you to shut borders but uproar that you're not allowing people to come home.

People crying that you aren't acting fast enough, yet you aren't giving people enough notice to act.

People blaming you for businesses & services not acting fast enough as if you're the one sitting behind the service desk.

& don't forget it's your fault the Internet & websites aren't working.

People, grown-up adults, asking you to tell them what to do & then ignoring your advice.

Essential employees need you to keep schools open so they can continue to work to help their communities & avoid joining the long line of Centrelink vulnerables, yet everyone else is demanding you to close schools. The advice is schools are open to help the people you depend on! Doctors, nurses, cashiers etc. If you don't want to send your kids, DONT.

People in the comfort of their armchairs, abusing you for not enforcing systems to keep them safe yet complain when you do enforce them.

You have received backlash from every direction, every angle, in every form - from strangers who have never even seen you in person. They have no consideration for your own personal struggles or understanding of how much work you're doing behind the scenes.

I see it, it's all over social media. It's on my own personal newsfeed. Yet some of these people, have never worked a day in their life, some of these people have just had their allowances doubled yet still demand more, some of the people disregard any form of regulations, some of these people want you to do all the work for them.

Yet, despite all of that, here you are - You are fronting every single ****ing day. You don't get holidays or a home time. You have been working night & day to implement systems to help people. Your people.

You are granting millions of dollars of assistance to people to help them in this crisis. Rent relief, allowances, business grants, pushing for mortgage pauses! You are implementing systems under other peoples advice. You are remaining calm, even though you may be shaking on the inside.

Droughts, Floods, Bush fires & now Covid - 19. Most Prime Ministers haven't dealt with half of it.

I know it's hard, but keep going. Those who would never want to stand in your shoes, appreciate you. 🍀

From Me, An independent Fifo Wife & protective Mother.

Who waved her husband goodbye on Sunday, not knowing when I'll see him next. He won't travel or risk transmission. He'll stay there to work for us, so we have a roof over our head & to avoid falling into a pit where thousands of people need help.

We know while we are able, we will continue pushing on & fighting, so other people who need help, get it.

Stay safe everyone & remember this too will pass 🌻

Default Re: Covid 19 -

The issue is that we know what the experts say, and it contradicts the government's approach. They're taking us for fools when they say they are consulting with experts when it's clear they're not.

I'm on a FB group with people modelling the disease progression, most of whom work in healthcare, and there isn't one person that thinks the government is doing a good job. Many are scared of whats coming in the next 2-3 weeks and disappointed because it was largely avoidable.
