How many of the people drinking Malt Runner are drinking it cold, straight from the fridge I wonder?

I did that when I first tried it and found it rather lacking and, to be honest, boring. After letting it warm up a little, somewhere between chilled and room temp, I found its flavour really came out and transformed it into a very interesting beer indeed.

Fully agree with that RG. I found the same thing an alluded to as much in my earlier post on the subject. I'm still not totally sold but certainly a slightly 'warmer' temp is required for drinking to bring out the chocolate and keep the cherry finish. Too cold all you get is a espresso taste and no lingering flavours at all.

Bit of a problem with beers generally given its winter and the fridge is turning everything to ice. Best to adjust the thermostat a bit to compensate a bit....

I feel that way with any beer I drink...

Fair enough an ice cold beer on a hot summers day is hard to beat...But I actually like my beer 'cool'...sort of about the temp it gets after about 10 mins of not being in the fridge.

Yeah, a beer like that, or any other for that matter, should be consumed from a glass and as others have pointed out, not at freezing cold temps.

Hey, La Trappe is one of my favourite breweries...almost all I drink in winter.

What was the 'white'?
They used to have 'Witte', but that was crappo, and may have been discontinued...

Holgate disappoint me everytime.

Toohey's Platinum. Gold and black label on the bottle. Very high alcohol content for a beer, but ultra smooth and absolutely beautifully refined, without tasting processed.

It's about the same price as Corona, but well worth it. Not to be confused with Toohey's Extra Dry, green and gold label, which is nice also, but cheaper for a reason.

Well, i don't keep all of them and its hardly a whole room full but here's mine....



Order is dodgy to the right, great to the left...but a bit of that is personal preference. As you can see most rows are a few beers deep LOL.

Fair bit of James Squire in there but that is just because it's easy to find as much as anything (and not too bad value for most of it given its $50 a carton....not getting LC for that....). LC Pale Ale keeps its spot on the far left of greatness....mmm..yummy!

Anyone had Hargreaves Hll?

Enjoyed there Hefewezen and Pale Ale the other nite during a MotoGP or F1 session, was fantastic.

Also, Coldstream Brewery Naked Ale went down a treat.

The Steigel I had to finish the nite was, in a word, crap. Bitburger is better.



I have been trying some ciders lately.... Dickens Scrumpy Cider was tart but refreshing, and Rekorderlig Pear Cider was mind-blowing... Just like drinking a nice crisp pear

oh yuck, that choc stout tastes like absolute *** ! i drank that years ago at cookie. ugh.

my best tasting beer was my first homebrew batch. half malt cooper mix. Velvet smooth, beautiful consistancies, good head. my old man just visited from perth, so i (Reluctantly) gave him my last #1.

A Really nice off shelf beer is oranjeboom (dutch).. easily my favourite european beer.
Also, from left field, and quite suprisingly, budwesier is actually quite nice.

honestly though, if you appreciate beer, start brewing !

just noticed a fellow cidar drinker. i dont touch the apple stuff, but after living in europe 10 years ago i found pear cidar. in the past 18 months its finally started hitting boutique shops. One because i persisted he order some in.

that was St hellier, which is french, and wasnt too bad at all !
but then i found another one, which is Irish.. ill find the name, green bottle, started with M i think... That was so smooth, really really nice.

Yeah, I did. I haven't opened it yet, mainly because I'm away next week, with another two couples, so I've decided to wait until I head up the coast to open it.

Is'nt St Hellier a Jersey brew ? The Irish cider of which you speak I believe is Magners and yes it is a bloody nice drop .

st hellier is definately off a 'french island' called jersey, in a town called, st hellier.. and yea,
just easier to call it french

Jersey is actually part of the UK M8 . It was the only part of the UK to be occupied by the Germans in WWII .

I dont' touch cider generally but to be honest i'm not sure i've ever had a 'good' one either. Pear one looks like a goer....will investigate.

You can do some great home brew stuff these days mainly because of the great supplies available at the local home brew/craft brew shops. Sadly the price of good home made stuff has gone up (blame the price of hops mainly) but then again you can make some great stuff. And of course the real fun is playing around with the stuff to get it just right to your taste. Hell some of the 'stuff ups' taste the best LOL.

Here is an example of my latest Fresh Wort beer brewed outside in the nice and cold (for bris) weather. German dark lager 'cerni pivo'. Great stuff.

The pivo (unsurprisingly given the malt runner is also a dark lager) tastes very similar. If you rack off your beer after primary fermention onto some frozen berries you get much the same outcome i'm told. If anything my dark lager is a fraction heavier in mouth feel (not as 'wattery') both because i think its literally less diluted RE malt/water ratio but also because i fermented it a fraction warm for a lager. Head is also not as great. Still, its early days and the beer in the above shot was a 'test run' that was not bulk primed and only in the bottle carbing up for a 'few days' (so shoot me i couldn't wait for a taste LOL). I'm sure as the CO2 goes up in the bottle it will come out great. Very coffee on the palate but some chocolate there....

Part of the reason i didn't get so excited about the JS Malt Runner was when you can knock it off so easilly (albeit expensive by home brew standards at $25 bucks a carton) for much less what's the point?

Now i have sufficiently confused everyone out there with the craft brewing terminology i will terminate this post. Beer is just so much fun when you work out how its made....and you learn alot home brewing for sure....

Just made a batch of home made Hoegaarden. Very nice if you like Coriander flavoring in your beer. Its not for everyone, but I personally like it.
