No new cases or deaths for NZ so CMR is unchanged and active cases remain at 0.1% (1).

The UK had just over 1.5k new cases and 556 deaths so the CMR is back up to 14.130%.

Just over 20k new cases in the USA and 637 deaths sees CMR down to 5.78% and active cases down to 61.6%.

Other notable points:
The USA completed 18M tests and Spain 4M;
Nepal (239), Iraq (429) and Chile (5,471) all recorded new daily highs.

Several nations in talks about opening borders to tourism.

Hopefully that will put some people at ease. Sometimes just the sense that normality is on the cards is enough to make people feel a little better.

It would be nice to be able to say in a few months that you are going on a booked holiday or you have family visiting from overseas.

With strict travel measures and a possible vaccine on the way it's better than nothing.

We'll probably start letting kiwis in shortly but they're not the big spenders the Chinese and European are. The local university has just sacked a lot of staff. They normally cater for thousands of foreign students (mostly Chinese) but not any more and perhaps not for a while to come.

Tourism and education were two of our biggest export earners. It's going to be a while before they get back to their previous levels as far as jobs go. The govt is planning on spending big to try and keep unemployment down but the right wing of the libs hate this idea. It goes against their "small govt, low tax" ideology.

The hotel used to host several dozen buss loads of Chinese air hostesses each week. As this unfolded you could see the looks of disgust and fear they received from passers by.

Eventually they needed a security escort between the bus and the hotel door as the looks would become snide comments and finger pointing.

For a while the buses became a trickle - I've only seen 2 in the past week. They still need the security escort even though the streets were mostly empty.

Give it 2 more weeks when restrictions ease even more, when people start to go out drinking and walking around inebriated and when the several buses full of Chinese hostesses return there will be some vented anger towards the Chinese I'm sure.

I'm also wondering if Australia will no longer be the desirable holiday destination it one was for the Chinese due to the political banter between our nations.

LOL... it's actually the opposite.

In round numbers the state governments guarantee about 3,000 intern places a year. Accordingly the federal gov regulates the med schools to this number for domestic students.

The 500-600 int'l students come here to study of their own volition. It's their fortune that although guaranteeing 3,000 the state governments have sufficient needs & budgets for 3,400 interns, so the surplus is offered to int'l graduates.

That isn't how university funding works.

The federal government decides how many places to fund in each course and those get subsidised. Those subsidised places go to australians.

Over and above those places universities can offer as many full fee paying places as they like. Most of these are filled by overseas students. I took some FF subjects once upon a time for specific reasons.

The reason entry levels are so high is there are far more graduating students than there are places. Even back in my day teachers were busily brainwashing students and parents into believing if the kids didn't get a degree they would never get a decent job. The high entry levels are justified for engineering medicine etc, but certain courses like physio (for some reason) are massively oversubscribed. The entry requirement reflects supply and demand. BSc Physics on the other hand is easy to get into even though it's fairly hard, because there are no jobs.

The real problem with overseas students is the universities turn a blind eye to cheating and lower assessment standards to get them through the course. They are killing their market because the reason people come here is our qualifications once had some cred internationally. Corruption is rife in india and asia. Some of the "graduates" they produce are properly breathtaking.

I remember a SENIOR Indian mech eng specifying round section steel for a frame because round sections are "strong". People's faces just fell off...

That is incorrect. Full fee paying international students help subsidise our kids education.

In regard to Universities I want to know why so many of their employees are casual. Casual employment should be a transition period to permanent, not a long term arrangement.

collects the medicare rebate and apportions an
amount to the states for health.

But the states aren't compelled to use it in any particular way
as it is in consolidated revenue.
