Default Toyota Tundra for Oz

Seems like the large ute segment is set to take off in Oz with the F150 in the pipeline and now the Toyota Tundra also getting closer to being a candidate.

Get your name down as one of the testing 300

This part is interesting given their Ford association.

"Toyota and its local engineering partner, the Walkinshaw Automotive Group – the former parent company of Holden Special Vehicles – have already been working on the right-hand-drive Tundra remanufacturing program for more than three years.

As pointed out Toyota's 230 plus Oz country wide dealership for servicing and parts will be a major plus.

Was involved in one of the parts that goes into this conversion, the amount of testing required to get through Toyota's engineering team was nuts.

Was/is what it should be?

Look forward to the market dropping on those $150k utes.

The OEM item didn't even meet Toyota's own specifications when we tested it

However, they required very stringent testing compared to developing the same product for RAM and Silverado.

Tundra - failed destructive testing to their own specs, pulled apart under tension.

For what it is thats for me to know and you to figure out, but I was involved in the discussions about some of the locally manufactured parts that go into that conversion.

Also made for the RAM and Silverado, so far none of the others have been as thorough as Toyota have, although HSV is very stringent with quality - Toyota is next level.

I'd sooner buy something that comes out of HSV's production line than any of the others in the industry like some prominent ones who've been around for 20+ years.

Saw two Tundras in camo going through Crookwell a month or so back. Local Toyota dealer has a few "expressions of interest" for when details drop.

Its hilarious how continuously everyone was saying 'No one wants American utes'.

They've always wanted American utes, just no one was willing to put money on it - except HSV.

Thats why 2001-2006 Brazillian RHD F250/F350 are worth more now with 500,000km on the clock then they were when they were new.

Super passionate business as well, they're a bit uncoordinated for an OEM, but that was because they grew massively in a very short space of time. I don't think they anticipated demand for what their product, everything ramped up massively, nekminnit they're running 24 hour production as well.

Their warehouse crew are hilarious too, if they were more relaxed they'd fade out of existence

Its like they have their own timezone, there's GMT +10 then there's HSV warehouse crew time.

No one ever said that in the country.
Only city people don't get the need for proper toy haulers that can actually safely pull large fifth wheeler, caravans, horsefloats and boats.

Saw a new F250 yesterday pulling a 5th wheel horse float - had three horses in it.

Meanwhile everyone else is salty because of the price of fuel and feigning concern over how it won't fit in the car park at Woolworths Safeway. Because Woolworths Catalogue has nothing to do with this.

Thailand Specials and the 3500kg towing capacity

Yeah 3500kg in 2nd gear on redline at 40km/h on the next incline you see.

And no doubt did it with ease while sounding great unlike certain 4 door tiny tubs try to do. 3500kg BS pulling cap.

Absolute no brainer when you consider how huge the country is outside of the cities. Why limit your space and payload?

You can blame Holden for the 3.5t towing crap.
Remember when the PX came out is was 3.2t, not long after Holden released the Colorado and advertised 3.5t.
Immediately after Ford re-engineered the PX and upped it to 3.5t
Hilux at the time was 2.5t.
Although now that I think of it, pretty sure it was the PK Ranger that first went to 3t.

With the amount of flex the old PK Ranger had in its chassis, I would never consider getting anywhere near that 3t limit!

The US laws and standards as we know quite differ to our OTT standards, maybe too much but it ticks the box's at the same time limits many propective Imports.
Not surprised of the outcome to me.
As we know US standards are leaner than ours and the EU.
Walky have built up a great rep from yonks ago and the kid has done well diversifying the business model as well might I add.
There are a couple of others who are just as good also.

I agree I'd sooner any work done here on any yanky vehicle for at least its done to a high standard compared to less.

Tundra is one step closer to going on sale

https://www.drive.com.au/news/toyota...-in-australia/

Quote:
Toyota has confirmed it will launch its large Tundra ute in Australia to the wider public later this year, following a successful trial started in 2023.

The Tundra pick-up will go on sale locally in November, first with the Limited grade only before a more premium – but as yet undefined – variant offering "full-size, upscale comfort" following in 2025.

The market-leading car maker revealed the plans to media as part of its dealer conference on the Gold Coast happening this week.

"I am pleased to announce that Tundra is go," Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia's Vice President for Sales and Marketing, told media including Drive.

...

The Tundra trialled in Australia and due to arrive shortly comes in hybrid form, combining a 3.5-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine making 290kW/650Nm with a 36kW/250Nm electric motor-generator – and a nickel metal hydride battery – for total system outputs of 326kW and 790Nm.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission, and its braked towing capacity is rated at 4500kg.

The 300 vehicle "test programme " that started last year was done through a monthly $2500 lease.
