Smile Herrod Mustang 440kws.

"The Mustang GT in question is the work of Melbourne-based Herrod Performance, an outfit that has been creating all sorts of wild and wonderful (but mainly fast) Ford products for the last few decades.
Related Content

It doesn't look vastly different to the stock Mustang GT on which it's based; company honcho Rob Herrod figuring that anybody who wanted different wheels and tyres or a body kit could make up their own minds. But don't be fooled by the standard look, because beneath that black bonnet lies an engine any Ford performance fan would be proud to show the neighbours.

While the standard Mustang GT has been well received, if there's been a single moan it's that the standard 5.0-litre engine, while good, doesn't have the muscle of the supercharged V8 as seen in the last Falcon XR8 Sprint. Well, trust us when we tell you the Herrod Performance treatment fixes that perception.

As a Ford Performance Parts dealer, Herrod has access to the US-based catalogue and has managed to cherry-pick a few components that have transformed the Mustang's behaviour. Principle among those is a twin-screw supercharger that adds about six pounds of boost to the equation and blows through an intercooler.

A replacement exhaust retains the standard catalytic converters but Herrod adds a few strategically placed heat shields to manage undercar temperatures.

The electronic controls are fine-tuned by a revised program developed by Ford Performance to suit the application and where the stock Mustang GT generally produces about 260kW at the rear wheels, the Herrod version makes closer to 440 of those same KiloWatts.

For those keen on extrapolation, that rear-wheel power figures suggests a flywheel figure of nearer to – and probably better than - 500kW (against Ford's claim of 306kW for the standard car) so it should come as no surprise that the Herrod cars shaves more than a second off the standing 400m time and the same again form the 0-100km/h time (4.2 seconds plays about 5.3)."

I wonder whether Herrods swapped out the Getrag for the Tremec TR6060 6 speed.

The reports say the Chinese made Getrag has reliability issues- with the 500kw power odd, I would think the owners would prefer to have a stronger manual 6 speed box used in the American Muscle cars like Viper, Camaro, Corvette, Hellcat etc, and I note that the Mustang GT350 and GT350R uses a Tremec gearbox - a modified TR3160 as well?

Nice, but Ford, build the GT350 in RHD and sell it here. I WILL BUY ONE.

So @ 90k on the road for a blower / inter cooler / lowered suspension and a suede steering wheel .....

Not sure if that's good value or not ?
Maybe we've been spoilt with our "local" products for too long.

And that is seemingly with the fragile Chinese Getrag instead of the robust and proven Tremec TR6060....

In hindsight- this appears bashing and I did not mean it to be. I am simply recalling my very early years putting in a rally raceshop built 1.6 Kent engine with twin side draft webbers into my MK 11 Cortina- and blowing gearboxes, differentials, engine mounts, alternators, alternator brackets etc.

And my comment about fragile Chinese getrag is a little of an overreach.

But, I note the Getrag is rated at 500nm with following specs:

KEY FEATURES
» Max. Torque Capacity 500 Nm
» Weight (dry) 49,5 kg
» Installation length 633 mm
» Input Shaft - Differential n.a.
» Synchronisation
› 1st and 2nd gear triple cone
› 3rd and 4th gear double cone
› 5th and 6th gear single cone
› Reverse gear single cone
» Gear Spread Ratio 6,9
» Max. Gross Vehicle Mass/Gross Trailer Mass 4250 kg/6500 kg

You can see that the torque capacity is for a gross max vehicle weight of 4,250kg -was designed for light trucks, so is probably a safety margin of sorts for a lighter vehicle with higher torque above 500nm.

The FGX XR8 has the Tremec 6060, and with the ratios in the gearbox, is rated some 680nm for the first 3 gears, and some 880nm for 4th to 6th.

But, this is rated with a maximum vehicle weight of 2,400kgs, so has not got the weight buffer of the Getrag box at 500nm. However, the Tremec has double-cone and triple-cone synchronizers on all gears.

Anyway- it does beg the question why the Shelby 500 Mustangs went with the TR6060 and not the Getrag, and I wonder if owners planning on adding a 2.3 eaton blower with intercooler to their Australian Mustangs would be better served swapping over to the TR6060. Time, engine mods and blown gearboxes may provide the answer.....

Anyway- this is not a dig at the Mustangs- just a mechanical nut with experience of mismatched power upgrades blowing machinery -and wondering about how a Getrag would cope with northwards of 650 nm, fast gear changes, and sticky rubber.......

I agree with asagaai's post, it's the thought it's there. It would never go away.

And $90k for a Mustang that's not a GT350?
The mining boom is long gone.

there always the Hennessey Mustang which i think trumps over the Harrod one so does the Shelby kit for that matter I think then there is the Rouch kits take your pick

the Hennessey has 2.8L supercharger not the 2.3L

Like all I love the power but there is a point in which if you have 420kw or 440kws it makes next to no difference.

GT350 is still the winner in my books.

Doubt gearbox is a problem. They would sell hundreds of these kits in the US and they come with warranty. I've never heard of it being an issue.
