Removing a Supercharger

Hi guys,

Over the weekend I replaced the air filter and adaptor on her AU as the previous filter and adaptor was quite poor.

Well somehow out off all this I managed to distroy the S/C propellor. The bizzar thing thats killing me is that neither the filter nor the adaptor has any gash marks on it so I have no idea how this has happened.

TBH this has really guttered me as it seems to thing after thing going wrong with car after car.

Now I have spoken with Vortech over in S.A who will happily look into my charger for me when I have it delivered. Now personally I really cant be stuffed for paying for the labour in having a machanic remove it for me, to then do then same thing and sent it off to have the extra 20% plus labour added to the final bill.

My question is guys, and please dont rip me a new one for asking what may be a very obvious question, to remove a S/C (Sidemount) is as simple as removing the 3 bolts and oil line? The last thing I want to do is create more damage on this car and distroy it completly.

On a positive note we are both looking at this oppertunity as a chance to upgrade the charger to a bigger and better one. But money talk.

For your information which may help answer my question I have added some photos of the whole thing which will maybe add greater understanding.

Sad to hear about the damage, spending hard earn $$$$ on fixing stuff is rarely fun but hopefully like you said it will lead to bigger and better things.
I cant comment on removal but i would suggest removing all intercooler pipes and the intercooler aswell, those broken bits have to go somewher and my bet is they are in the intercooler. Good chance you will need a new one

I have removed the piping to the S/C already so it bare so to speak. I didnt even think of the intercooler....

Bugger. :(

Make sure you loosen the belt tensioner first. After that it is as easy as undoing the bolts and oil line.

And do check to see if you can find all the pieces, through to and including the throttle body.

i`d be a bit worried bits of impeller may have been ingested by the engine.

I doubt wether you caused this by removing the old filter, I think that sort of damage could only have occured by sucking some debris in while the supercharger was running.

I doubt you could break all the vanes with the SC not in operation.

I think it has ingested something while it was driving.

So if its gone in the engine then, whats the best way to extracting this???

I'd dare say if they made it to the engine n no damage can be found, they prolly found its way out he exhaust by now. I'd be removing the intercooler and having a look for the impeller vanes in there till they are accounted for. You would have to be unlucky for any of the vanes to have made it past the intercooler core as the pieces look too large to pass thru.

That could have only happened with it sucking something through with the motor running, but as its intercooled, i doubt any of the impeller has made it through, or you probably would've known about it with the motor by now.
But as others have said, tke the belt off, unbolt the 3 bolts holding it to the bracket and you might have enough room to undo the oil line, and thats it.

Hey guys,

Yeh i need a 8 or 9 Allan key as Ive only got a max of 7 and it’s just a tad too small. I took off the cooler aswel and got the remaining fragments out of it. So thank God it hasn’t past that!

I will purchase the larger Allan Key tonight from Bunning’s and begin removing the charger. With removing 1 cooler pipe, the oil feed line has already become accessible.

Id be concerned about the amount of impellor debris that resulted from the failure. have you found much metal?

Hopefuly the inetrcooler has caught it, if not - you may very well have damaged your engine as well.

It's essential you account for the missing veins.

Don't forget the oil drain back line also and there should be about 6 bolts holding the charger to the bracket. and the biggest vortech you'll fit in there on that bracket is a v1-v2 t trim.

The oil drain line is the single braided line going to the charger your refering to???
