Default Window Tint legalities and insurance

I've searched and found quote a few threads on window tints and less than 35% is illegal etc etc.

What I want to know is which windows does this affect? Is it a blanket statement for all windows?

On my EL my theory is to have the back window and the rear passenger windows as dark as I can and have the front windows done at the legal 35%.

What I would like to know and I probably will go and ask the local cops if I can't find out here is if that is legal.

I will also contact my insurance company to find out if I'm still covered if I do that.
My reason for the back window is that it doesn't affect you because you can't do anything about whats directly behind you. I can still see using my door mirrors through 35% tint on the front on things further behind me. Same thoughts for the rear passenger windows.

Your thoughts/facts/opinions?

Depending on which state you are in the laws will vary a little but generally speaking no matter which window you tint it must not have a light transmission of less than 35% (lower the number, the darker it is, eg 20% is darker than 35% etc). Some states have a maximium of 70% on front wind ups for example.

The only exception to this rule at least in Qld is a limo with a privacy screen between the driver and rear passengers. When the screen is activated there effectively is no glass behind the driver and therefore you can get away with a darker tint.

Some people will tell you it's ok because hardly anyone ever gets pulled up on it, but do you want to take the chance and be the exception.

With regards insurance cover, if you are in charge of a defective or unroadworthy vehicle your insurer has the right to void your insurance as you shouldn't have been on the road in the first place.

Sorry I couldn't give you more positive news but that's the law.

I'm pretty sure the only exception is that for a ute you can have it at any % as being a commercial vehicle the rear window usually is blocked by stuff at the back.

pretty sure thats only for the back window and the little side windows. The 2 main windows still need to be 35%

i've been told a few times that, technically, all aftermarket tint is illegal as most cars come with some sort of uv layer on the glass already. tinting over a tint is illegal.

OK what about wagons? Can I tint the rear window and side windows in the boot area to whatever % I want?

What I'll do is go to the police and ask them. There is a local cop shop in my suburb so hopefully they'll help me out and I'll come back and post here with some facts.

If I can be bothered I'll contact my insurance company and ask them will I be covered as well. That should clear it up. Stay tuned for an update sometime next week.

the police may not necessarily be the right people to ask. they only have to suspect a car is 'illegal' to slap a sticker on it and then when you take it over the pits they will confirm whether or not it is.

there's been a few times when cops have said one thing and then i've been through regency (transport authority in s.a.) only to be told a different story. these guys are the ones that have authority to remove defect stickers etc so i expect they are more up to speed on rules than a cop.

i would ring the applicable transport people, not the cops.
