Default Leaded fuel

I may be purchasing a Kombi off my older brother. Now the car runs on leaded Fuel, How can i get round this? will i have to change the engine?? He said you can run it one Priemium? Will that work? i just couldnt be F***ed addin dropes and 5hit

you can run it on PULP/ULP but after a while valve seat recesion will occure.

Why don't you just add Flashlube or something like that. Much easier than changing the engine or stuffing around with the valves

Slightly off topic - I use PULP in my leaded engine, with the additive mentioned.

Is there any risk of damage if you put TOO much of this additive in? Does it simply burn off? Does it affect octane rating?

I imagine it would just burn off. However it could cause over a long extended period an excessive carbon build up. which can after getting thicker and thicker break off and pit the valve seats.
That is a loooooongggggg time though.

The whole idea of lead in fuel was to cusion the valves on closing hence is why to make a leaded engine unleaded you need to replace valves and valvle seats with hardened ones. (usually a good idea to replace head, and tappit gaskets along with new valve stem seals too. In Short, a good head job.

They make kits to put Subaru 4cyl engines in them.... might be worth looking into. Unfortunatley I don't know who "they" are, but I know the kits do exist.

There is also a train of thought not to use flashlube or other aditives at all and just run straight pulp. Their thinking is the valve seat recession will take a very long time to affect anything and over that time you could save up for the necessary head work to be done.

but if your going to do that, you might aswell just add the flashlube stuff anyway, just in case.
its not expensive nad its really no hassle.

LRP is being phased out, if it hasnt already gone.

I had an 81 Mazda 323 SS, it ran fine on PULP, but i bought one of those inline fuel treatment things from Repco.
Its also what im planing on running in my Escort van when i get it on the road.

Dad ran his 1958 ford customline on LPGAS for ten years before valves burnt and recession was a problem. never had the flash lube kit on it, personally for what it costs, i'd fit a flash lube kit and run premium fuel. ATM everything i have has an alloy head, which should have good enough valves and seats to cope with unleaded. come to think of it a combi would have alloy heads too??? ask a Vdub mechanic

what is this flash lube kit you speak of?
i was under the assumption flash lube is simply a fuel additive.

It is, but you can get it in several ways. One is in kit form that you basically introduce into your fuel line somewhwere and it automaticaly adds the flash lube as the fuel is used. Simple explanation but I dont know the exact details.

Otherwise you can buy it in a tube or bottle and add it to the tank when you fill up.

it a bottle you run a line into the inlet manifold i think(never really looked into one) it has an adjustable jet and manifold vaccum draws it from the bottle automatically, apperntly you don't need much of the stuff per tank of fuel.
