This is what I still dont get RE: Australian economy...

“In economic terms, a recession is declared after two quarters of negative growth – and this industry has now seen seven consecutive quarters of negative growth.

House prices went up in the major two, wages stagnant, basically giving cash away, Gov propping up with infrastructure (we need it though)...just let the sucker crash and burn.

But ,my budget surplus. The Libs are trying so hard to keep their solid economic management reputation going, even though they have done nothing to support it, and the economy is going nowhere. Scotty from marketing has a scapegoat now in the coronavirus though, so he can deflect the blame.

Just watch any press conference about the economy use the virus as a scapegoat. No mention of stagnant wages, rising unemployment etc. It's all the virus

A little biased me thinks.

We've also had a few fires also.

I'm a swinging voter & I'm not big on Scmo, but I think his mob is a little better than the alternative.

The simple fact is that wage stagnation, along with increased housing prices and other costs of living, is the problem. This idea of Australian wages being too high, just has to stop. Blind Freddy can see that if John or Joanna (sex equality) Citizen has no disposable income, then a big part of the economy is going to die. We are not third world and should not be treated as such. In fact, we should be encouraging third world to pay their employees better, and not allow ourselves to be pushed down.

Good points GCRXR6.

It's always staggering those claiming wages are too high don't want to cut their own...and then have no way of explaining if wages were cut how do you maintain your living standard when every expense you have to pay didn't drop by the same %.

In my own case every interest rate cut on our home mortgage hasn't suddenly made me rush out and buy more, I've told the bank to maintain my repayment amount and not drop it like they "kindly" offer. So I don't have an extra cent in my pocket but have shaved a year or two off the home loan.

far out you reckon ?
500 units not bad to what - I think its pitiful but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
So I looked up google for our car population, not worried its 2018 that came up but when looking at those Ford model numbers barring Ranger, Mustang not being a traditional volume type of product (in saying that the euros hipo models must be impressive numbers I'm guessing) all I'm seeing is red if Ford was my business.

19.2 million
There were 19.2 million registered motor vehicles in Australia as at 31 January 2018. The national vehicle fleet grew by 2.1 per cent between 2017 and 2018. Toyota topped the list of passenger vehicle makes for the 13th consecutive year with 2.9 million registrations.Jul 26, 2019
https://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@...1%20Jan%202018

2.9M registered toyotas....
Wonder what Prado is for eg.

Focus at 169 sales for the month is sad for a great car.
Compared to Corolla Mazda 3 and Vw Golf it’s numbers are pathetic.
Are Ford just trying to kill it off so they can just sell SUV s with a branch for Fpv type cars in Mustang Focus st and Fiesta st.
The arrival of Puma May spell death if Ficus.
Sad Focus should sell much higher numbers.

Stop the importation of the third world into Australia and wages may rise in relation to cost of living.

I don’t really judge other people’s opinions if they can somewhat rationally justify their view.

So, how so?

The government and consumer businesses are sitting there scratching their heads wondering why we’re not spending. It’s really not hard. They waged a war on penalty rates. At the end of the day most people didn’t lose a whole lot in real terms, but all they heard is ‘they’re cutting my wages’. So they think they cut back. Every year they fight against minimum wage rises. Every week there’s a new report telling us our wages aren’t going to rise anytime soon, while the cost of living continues to rise. The government of both persuasions sat back and allowed house prices to go through the roof, so young people stopped spending as the required deposit went well over six figures. They’ve allowed large scale manufacturing to whither. Yes there’s plenty of smaller manufacturers out there, but they don’t grab headlines like the closure of our auto manufacturers did. The libs hate welfare, so those on welfare spend less again.

And here we are, a nation that feels poorer than we really are.

Some pitiful numbers for some models there.

Can anyone tell me the last time they saw or heard an advertisement for the Fiesta, Focus, Endura, Ecosport or Mondeo?

Ford seems to pump a heap of cash into promoting vehicles such as the Ranger but doesn't spend a cent promoting anything else.

How tf does Ford think think they're going to shift any of these vehicles if no-one knows about them?

I own an MD Mondeo which I think is a fantastic, world-class car and yet I don't recall any kind of advertising for it since it (the MD) was launched in around 2014.

You do know that Fiesta, Mondeo and Ecosport are now discontinued product don't you.

As for Focus it costs Ford too much money to bring them in. In a market (small car) that is dominated by price theres no point in them trying because they can't import cars to sell at a loss. Simple really.

On another note I think we will see some more manufacturers leave Australia in the coming years. We simply have too many brands on offer for our uptake. With the cost of warranty (nearly all been pushed out to 5 years) and the threat of the ACCC cracking down on any manufacturer looking sideways Australia has become very hard to work with from a manufacturers point of view.

I'm saving to get my own place, so my weekends are very tame these days.

Trying to get into an apartment in Melbourne's North Western suburbs, seems to be about $400K-$500K for one bedroom one car spot around Niddre and Airport West.

It's a good spot, not far from airport, not far from city and has trams.

You sound like my old man, close to the airport just in case he tells me. I don't know what that means. Running from the Feds, ATO, PETA's, Nazi's. Who knows.

Everest at around 500/month is generally around the 3rd best selling true 4x4 wagon on the market behind Prado and Landcruiser. This month it was 6th but only 10 units behind 4th placed 4x4 wagon.

Good luck in closing the gap to the cruisers considering where the Everest is in its life cycle.

My understanding is the Everest's key rivals are the other ute-based 4WDs, being the MU-X, Pajero Sport and Fortuner. MU-X and Pajero Sport outsell Everest - MU-X leads the segment mainly because it's cheap, Pajero Sport (particularly the 2020 refresh) is a cracker package and fully deserves to sell what it does, Everest has priced itself out of the game with the upper spec model compared to the others although the Trend priced about right, while the Fortuner brings up the rear with consistently poor reviews not helping its cause. Not sure how often they'd get cross shopped with Cruisers, maybe they do, either way the sales are impressive for such expensive rigs, wonder what the mix of private sales are in those numbers.

This. I wanted an Everest but got the paj Sport because I just couldnt justify the extra $5-10k depending on trim for the Everest.

500 units in a month to me seems low for that vehicle, it should be doing much better when the Territory was doing more than that pretty easy. Yes its not a Territory replacement but most non car people wouldnt realise that.

Over 3,000 4x4 Rangers sold last month, the majority of them are 2.0 diesels.
Imagine the conversation if they were to put the V6 powerstroke in Ranger and Everest.

Ranger is getting pretty close to knocking off Hilux. Only about 200 sales behind for the month. Hilux sales down 22%, Ranger just 5%. Similar to last month.

I will go out on a limb, knowing what is coming, that Ranger will surpass Hilux at some point this year. I think it's just a matter of time.

That's a good take. Wages are stagnant, yet the government is always against the average worker getting a pay rise. I'm sure they are happy to see bank ceo's pay rise by hundreds of thousands though.

How tf does Ford think think they're going to shift any of these vehicles if no-one knows about them?
Ecosport is gone. Replaced by Puma, so only what stock is on hand to clear out. Fiesta will only be available as ST, and it goes on sale soon. Mondeo is no more some time this year too.

There is some Endura and Focus advertising if you look. Focus ST goes on sale soon too, so that should help boost numbers a little.

The Ford Ranger grabbed a whopping 25.7 per cent of the 4x4 ute segment in February, ahead of the Toyota Hilux with 23 per cent, leaving the others to fight for the other half of the segment. In year to date terms, Ford has sold 5449 Ranger 4x4s ahead of Toyota Hilux (4978 sales) and Mitsubishi Triton (3287 sales).
