You were right to start with. Maybe your ex is wrong or the rules are different in Tasmania?

The section on turning right says:
Turning right: On your approach, to a roundabout you must select the right lane, signal right, stay in the right lane and signal left before exiting into the right lane.
Exiting a roundabout
: If practical, you must always signal left when exiting a roundabout.

(1) This rule applies to a driver entering a roundabout if the driver is to leave the roundabout more than halfway around it.

Maximum penalty—20 penalty units.
