What the bloke down my street does with trailers is just that. Removes the vin plate and registers them as home made. He does that because he buys trailers that have been sitting unreg for that long that the past rego papers are non existant. A new vin number gets created.
But like anything, talk to whoever you are using to rego the trailer first for their proffesional opinion on whats required.
